Ok, so after a nice semi-long build-up (yes, there will be a thread with pics once she runs), I have come to a halt on my progress.

The only issues I have left to fix seem to not be so simple. The transmission is .5" too far back, which keeps me from bolting up the carrier bearing for the DS. But let me explain from the beginning:

87 N/A chassis with a rebuilt 87 7mgte. 87 gte harness/ecu/dash. R154 transmission. Front half of the DS is the R154, the rear half is from the N/A w58 DS so that it bolts up to the stock diff.

The problem I am having is that the transmission and its mount are 1/2" or so too far back. My question is:

Is there a difference between the driver side and passenger side motor mount brackets or motor mounts?

Edit - This question was inspired by Applesauce: What is the difference between the R154 and W58 transmission brackets? I may not have the right one.

changing the mount will only move the mounting holes around as the trans is mounted to the engine.

all the diffs have the same bolt pattern for the drive shaft.

are you trying to mount the carrier bearing last?
are the tabs on the carrier bearing on the bottom so the drive shaft is up in the tunnel?

Did you try either of the shafts Before you made the hybrid one? Or, did you mate the other halves together and try that?

Use this as your excuse to have a custom one piece aluminum made. Ya that will take a little more cash. But, the barrel has no bottom, you will never fill it up.

I tried both DS's. You can't use the front half of the W58 spline on the R154 transmission which is why I did the hybrid. The carrier bearing will bolt up fine if I pull the DS out of the transmission. It's the transmission bracket which matters. It has to bolt up so that it keeps vibration to a minimum. This is a part that CANNOT be left out.

The problem is, I may need to pull the engine out a little to bring the DS and transmission together while the carrier bearing is bolted up. The problem still remains, what are the differences between the W58 and R154 trans brackets? A picture would easily explain this.

And no one has answered: Does it matter what side the motor mount brackets go on the block?

if the bracket is bolted the body and trans the bracket does not matter. the drive shaft doesnt hit the bracket. you put the yoke in the trans bolt it up to the rear end then bring the barrier bearing up and bolt that in.

if you had both r154 and w58 ds why did you mix them?
its all the same bolt pattern for the pinion on the rear end.

edit: 89+ theres only one way the motor mounts go on. pre 89 iirc you use the front 2 or the engine wont go in.

Hvy, you aren't making too much sense. What bracket is the bracket that's bracketing what? lol

Break down: I want to use the trans bracket and the DS bracket. I can bolt the DS up fine, but the trans bracket is not fitting properly. This is the issue:

The chassis bolt hole is here --> O O <-- the bracket hole is there.

Obviously SOMEWHERE, something is not right.

The second half of the DS's are different by ~1/4", and it is making a difference when I bolt everything up. That is why I hybridized them. I will be switching to a single piece soon, but right now I do not have the funds. Unless someone has one for cheap locally or within driving range.

Tha back halfs of the drivershafts are the same. Are you saying the transmission crossmember isn't aligning right or that the carrier bearing isn't? I think the tranny crossmember is different...

well first you said the ds wasnt fitting and now your saying the trans bracket isnt fitting.

do you have a r154 trans mount?

Ok, sounds similar to my problem the other day. I changed the carrier bearing in my car and found out I had a w58 tranny. But when I looked at the driveshaft it isnt even the one ment for our cars. So the bolt holes didnt line up on bracket with the chasis. So just drill the holes where they need to be on the bracket. Thats what I did anywho and it worked fine. Just holds me off till I get the single peice.

The DS fits fine and is the right one. But yes, there was a slight difference in length. I laid them side by side so I could see for sure.

The bracket for the transmission is what I am having trouble with. Does anyone have a picture of an R154 chassis bracket? This would answer my question quickly and without a doubt. I need a full on picture so I can tell if there are any designed bends that are missing from mine.

Well I'll be damned. You sir, deserve a big mother fucking cookie. :boink:

There it is. I have the straight one, so I need the one that HAS THE BENDS for the bolt holes. Fucking sweet. Now I just need to find one and get it here in 2 days... :nono:

Edit: Or do I have it backwards... Hmm... doing more research on this... You still get a cookie though.

I do have both styles, but the one with the bends has two big rubber pieces on it. $20 shipped if you want it. But, the postal service is closed tomorrow, so it couldn't ship til Tuesday.

I'll compare it to the one on my car tomorrow.

Ok, so to be clear on what happened:

I did have the w58 bracket, which is the one with the most angles

The one I got today is the R154 bracket, which is semi-straight and has the rubber brace on it.

This will be installed tomorrow along with my SOGI shifter and the walbro/megamouth DP are coming in on saturday! Sweet!
