Intake/exhaust mods and turbo failure danger

Hiya, Ive read a lot of stuff on forums that pretty much says if you fit a test pipe and a decent exhaust to your JZA70 the turbos will die pretty soon after, how real is this threat because from the tone of some of the threads people were saying it happens 9/10 times.

My cars stock atm except for a HKS Super Hybrid panel filter but I was planning to add a HKS Silent High Power cat back, a test pipe, and a HKS Super Power Flow Reloaded induction kit later in the year and I don't really fancy paying for a pair of new turbos too (if its unavoidable ill wait until I have the cash and do it all at once ofc)

Stock turbos are cheap.

THey go out because they have ceramic exhaust wheels that blow ass and start falling apart. Of course the higher the boost the shorter the life. Adding a ypipe and good exhaust might help them flow better and see a tad more boost making them think that the exhaust was the cause but its the turbos.

Just go single and be done.

even the jdm 2jz had the ceramic turbine wheels. the usdm had stainless wheels which are much more durable. so ditch for a set of usdm twins, (the 2jz ones will fit the 1jz i think, might need some modding) or go large single, but the single conversion will be cheaper in the long run.

They don't seem to fail immediately... mine have been holding up for about 2000 miles so far at 12-15 psi. 12 was what the boost went up to on it's own from the FMIC, air filter, and turbo-back 3" exhaust. It was creeping up to 14 on it's own when it got near freezing out a few times.

I wanted to run a steady 15 psi though, so I fixed my defective MBC and put it on and set it to that, along with a 440cc injector upgrade.

Have to bang the firewall in order to run the 2jz twins. Better to just go single. IF you dont want as much lag just run a tighter a/r on the exhaust side.

Hmm, my cars an auto so the less lag the better, would having the twins rebuilt with steel wheels if or when they die be a viable option? (would be cheaper over here than a big single conversion)

I think it all comes down to how well the motor/turbos were taken care of before you got it. I've run a 3" pipe from the turbos back on mine for over a year and a half now, one of the turbos is beginning to burn through a little bit of oil, but they've been run at 12-15psi pretty much daily for that entire time...

I would figure less backpressure would help lower egt's as well, but I'll be the first to admit I haven't done enough homework to claim that as fact.

I upgraded the stock twins for a price of 550 apiece add to that around 150 for shipping and insurance so roughly 1250 cash. To go single you have probably more expense but way more power gain.

Without fuel its like 1500 for a single kit or just a quality turbo and pieced together. You could get it cheaper if you used a holset or something. Then you need injectors should already have a good pump. afpr and something to tune with. Wideband too, Maybe like 2k-2500+/- depending what you do and how much you get everything for.

The only part of upgrading to a single is the lack of quality exhaust manifolds. A good PTE turbo will run you around $1400. If you already have a boost controller, solenoid, etc., then you can get the manifold & turbo, tune it to 10-11 psi, & won't have to worry about fuel upgrades.

EDIT: Or you can buy an entire kit from Driftmotion for $1500.

Billet precision 6262 is only 900. ball bearing is 1500.

tial wastegate is like 250 new.

the china manifolds hold up fine. THere just heavy and not super quality. which for a 1/2jz there only 150$ from zankoku.

Then you need a down pipe, intake, ic piping, and oil/coolant lines.
