OK, guys I'm installing a used tranny to replace mine. The problem is the place that I got it from doesn't know how long it has sat for, it's been at least a year. I drained the fluids and there were now metal shards or anything in it and it seems to shift fine. So what should I do before installing this thing? I bought a new rear seal and have all new fluid Royal Purple ready to go.
Thanks
Ryan

your better off with redline fluid, as the makeup of the royal purple eats synchros in our transmissions... as least thats what i remember from reading about transmission fluid.

the only thing i can think of is just shift it, and if everything is fine, then just bolt it on up. but once you get it on the car and running... just go out in first gear and second gear and drive around the block so you can get the new fluid all over everything. and if your really paranoid change the fluid after like 500miles.

I've heard several things about Royal Purple and Redline. MVP and Powerhouse both use Royal Purple in all of their tranny's. This is coming from my friend Trent (mod on SF) I talk to him daily and he swares by it. I remember him having a bad experience with Redline and as soon as he switched to Royal Purple it worked great. I'll see how it goes for the first couple of miles and will switch if I feel it's not doing what it is supposed to.

Used transmissions are a gamble...in a perfect world I'd have it inspected and rebuilt....but thats probably not an option as it wasn't for me either a month ago...as you say there was no large chunks of metal in the oil then put it in and see how it goes...I'd put atleast 2000 miles on the trans before I'd trust it on a long trip...

Lose the royal purple and get redline...

yeah...and ive also run shit 40w gear oil meant for machine lathes in my old toyota pickup for 4 years and it shifted like butter...doesn't mean it was a smart idea!!! Put 100,000 miles on the truck!

Going agaist the grain can work sometimes.....but that doesn't mean its good!

Stop encouraging people to use a product that is scientificaly proven harmful to the metals that our syncros are made of....and hinder the syncros from operateing to there full potential.
