Makes sense...I haven't looked at one before so I didn't know how they adjust, if at all.

It seems like a fairly common problem...i've seen at least 3 cases in my brief searches here on SM.

the key in my crank was NOT A TOYOTA KEY. :: angry :: I forgot to mention that. it's not even close to the required width. My custom key is a tap-in fit though, and snug in the pulley.:naughty:

BTW i ninja edited the last post...getting a wrench now

Good move, if you buy reasonable quality you have tools for life, one of mine I inherited and it's as old as I am, I bought a new one and retired this one to the Fat car for luggnut duties.

She runs! Reset ECU by pulling EFI fuse (pretty sure that's the ticket) and re-timed it once warm. My new pulley seems to run nicely on-center and I can tell from memory the old one was WAY out of whack for a long time.

I didn't know enough nor had I given it much thought then, but that damn pulley had been out of balance for some time. I saw the edge that is against the engine wasn't running smoothly, but just kinda shrugged it off thinking maybe it wasn't such a perfect thing since it looked like cast metal or something.

ALL OF THOSE assumptions were REALLY stupid...I just didn't really give it serious thought. Out of sight out of mind kind of thing. At least I wasn't the one to bolt the damn thing on. It runs true now (at least to the eye) and I can feel and hear the difference in revs. The internals still sound kinda noisy, but it could be the PS pump, I don't know yet. pulley seems fine though after about 50 miles, which isn't much - but I'll update if something goes awry.

BTW...its REALLY easy to hit 195ft/lbs with a 48" torque wrench! lol... I'm tempted to back it off and go at it again after a week or so. It just makes me nervous but If I put it on paper the mechanical advantage of a wrench that sticks out the engine bay would probably make sense.

I didn't bother calculating it out but yes, felt about that much :)

It's still running well! Better than it has... I'm sad I had to fix it that way but...I'm going to think about a new car soon anyway probably.

I took pictures of this though so I can share with the new owner should I sell it, I hate shit like this and I wouldn't wish it on anyone...except my car's previous owner. The key they used was probably from some hardware store and isn't even CLOSE to the correct size.

Thanks for all of your help guys, even in a funny fix such as this. I appreciate not getting flamed for it... any other forum, maybe. Not here though.
