Try charging your battery or jumping it ,Is the starter bolted in tight and nothing stopping it from being tight to the bellhousing?

The starter is flush to the mounting location. The battery shouldn't need to be jumped because the starter spins quickly (as the gears skip), but I tried it anyways to no avail. I'm really getting frustrated. Does anyone else have any ideas?

well now that i see it, then jumping the ignition wire with the battery should make it attempt to crank.

By jumping the wires all that would happen is the solenoid would pop and the starter would attempt to start? But by turning the key all of that happens anyways. Is there anything that jumping the starter bypasses that could cause the starter gear not to engage?

Sounds like the starter has a bad bendix that kicks the gear forword, Take the starter off and do a test on it and you will see if the gear mores forward.

I'm trying to avoid taking the starter back off. It is difficult to do so due to limited tools and a sloped driveway. I'm sure it wouldnt take me as long as it did the first time but I still don't wanna jump in and rip it out of there. I also would like to think that this new starter should work.

**EDIT** I took the old starter to the local Parts Source. They were able to determine that the starter had an intermitent problem and that I was on the right track by replacing in. Now I just need to get the new one to work. LOL.

I will be pulling the new starter off the car and returning it to Parts Source. They have ordered me a new one and we will test it before it leaves the store.

What is the voltage across the battery when this happens? If you're supplying adequate power and control to the starter (and it sounds like you are) then it has to be the starter itself. A lesson in always testing new parts prior to installing them.

You called it. I will do this from now on. I hope to have the new starter by Tuesday and will report back then if a new starter fixed the problem.

^^^This is clearly why you should ask around, and do the job right....

When it comes to starters always just change the contacts and for alternators replace the brushes....Part store re-manufactured parts and aftermarket parts are always Garbage. Instead of taking out the Intake Manifold again raise up the car and take a long extension and get to it from the bottom.

I didn't take off the intake manifold. I removed some stuff off the bottom of the upper manifold so I could get a better angle on the extensions. This was easier than going from the bottom because I am at school so I don't have access to our hoist.

Today I pulled the starter and will be leaving for Parts Source soon. What a difference experience makes. I got it off and in my hand in under 1.5 hrs. Will update later if I get it installed and running. **crosses fingers**

UPDATE: New starter in, some wiring repaired, car now runs. I finally got to take it for a nice long run.
