I recently replaced the starter in my 88 manual and while doing so I unbolted some things in the engine bay. This took place over the course of a week because I have limited tools and limited time per day. When I put everything back together I have 1 bolt left over and I can see a place for it on the intake manifold. However, I do not know what I am supposed to secure with this bolt.

#1 is the first thing I took off, I think I put this back in the right place

#2 is the empty one

#3 is the final piece I took off. It it in the right place because it is attached with the bolt show as well as a stud further to the right.

If anyone has a picture of this general area so I can visualize what is supposed to go there that would help alot. I have looked around this area as best as I can and I do not see anything hanging loose (although I can't see this area very well). I woud imagine whatever ataches to this spot on the manifold is being held behind the starter from when I pushed it into place.

Sorry for rambling, if you need clarificcation just ask.

Thanks

If the car runs then you're in the clear. Any of the things that bolt down there can be moved around with no problems. It kind of looks to me like your #3 is in the wrong place, but I haven't had any of the crap down there installed in my car in about 5 years.

Does the car run? ;)

HAHAHA. My battery died and I don't have jumper cables with me at school. My GF is bringing me some tonight so we will soon see if it runs. I just don't know why I have an extra bolt.

The reason I asked is because iirc correctly that's where the main ECU grounds go. My car isn't nearby so I can't be sure. Maybe someone else will chime in.
Here you go Saw in the pics everything needs move up a inch or 2 but you should get the idea.:icon_bigg

Yep, looks like the main ECU (and a few others) ground point. I can see the wires in the photo. Thanks. Maybe that's why his battery is dead ;)
Not a problem ,I take your advise all the time . Thanks for what you do for us JetJock.:icon_bigg

I got the ECU grounded finally...my arm will never be the same. Now I have a new problem.

When I turn the key, the starter does not engage the flywheel. It no longer just clicks, it sounds like its spinning and the starter gear is hitting the teeth on the flywheel. I don't know if that sentence made sense. Anyways, I figured my flywheel might be missing teeth so I put the car in gear and rolled it down the driveway slightly so the starter would be contacting a different part of the flywheel. This did not help, the symptoms remained the same.

Any help would be really appreciated.

there should be three wires on the back of your starter. If you can go under, grab a screwdriver and attempt to bridge the connection at the back, one from the wire that comes straight from the battery and the other wire that DOESN'T go to the front. You should be able to hear the engine try to turn over, and if it doesn't, then the starter is fubar'd.

3 wires? I know of only the two. One is a brown plastic clip with a spade connector inside, the other is directly beside it and is a bolt. I didn't have to disconnect any others when I pulled the previous starter so I'm not sure which ones you are talking about. Also, I cannot just the ones I see because one is all plastic. Sorry if I am missing the obvious.

I'm gonna go look at the starter I took off just to make sure.

EDIT: I have theold one here in front of me...there is only the two conncetions. I remember the new starter had another connection but I had nothing to connect to it so I left it alone. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Try charging your battery or jumping it ,Is the starter bolted in tight and nothing stopping it from being tight to the bellhousing?

The starter has 2 wires going to it AFAIK. One from the battery, one from the ignition switch, and then grounds itself to the engine block.
