the rattling sound I heard was for sure a bolt or bolts holding down the EGR cooler cover. The rattling is being caused by the exhaust leak, which was caused by the bolts backing out

lol. I couldn't fit my hand or wrench back there, and I don't have a jack nor time to try to loosen the trans like rayall suggested. Haha

Unbolt the tranny mount, and jack the rear of the tranny up, that will give you some room to work.

Okay so I tried this... 2 issues.

1: don't have a low profile enough jack

2: when loosening the trans mount to support bracket bolts, one of them sheered off. so I gave up on that.

Number 2 really discourages me from when I need to pull my entire drivetrain...

Try tightening them a little, before loosening them. Sometimes that can break the corrosion. If they all shear, you have to drill them out, and re-tap them.

Leverage is a wonderful thing. Once you remove the bolts, you should be able to shift the tail of the tranny up by hand, and stick something under it to keep it up.

Owning a Supra, is not for the faint of heart.

Is there any way to be able to get to the egr cooler bolts the way it sits in the car without jacking the rear up?

You need to take the weight off of the mount with a jack before you undo the bolts, or they might snap like that. Put the car on ramps or jack stands then put a jack on the rear of the transmission, just enough to touch the trans. Remove the mount, jack the rear of the trans up more, ta da. You can get a wrench in there now at least. lol

It's entirely possible to tighten the bolts without jacking up the trans, or anything else. You need a 1/4" ratchet, and a short 10mm socket. You might have to grind the socket down a bit to get back there, but it will work. I don't remember if there was 6 or 8 bolts.

If I absolutely HAD to take it somewhere for them to fix it, about how much would it run me?

Parent's idea, they're getting pissed at me...

It shouldn't take more than 1/2 an hour to tighten the bolts. Iirc, when I did mine I actually pulled the cooler out, cleaned everything up, and put it back together in the car in about an hour. I have small hands, and it was still a tight fit getting back there to start the bolts.
