Import>Rebuild?

Hey everyone. So basically i bought my supra with 144k miles on it. It ran great for around a month... I started to notice grey smoke and oil pooling in my exhaust pipe. I also found oil in my intercooler. So my first thought was either dead turbo, or yummy HG. It turns our the the gaskets and bearings on my turbo are blown, and same with my valve rings.

So I now face the option of either going all out and completely rebuilding my old engine, or just looking into buying a low milage 7m-gte from japan. (or maybe even 2jz :icon_bigg). I was wondering what your opinions are on this. If you think importing a new engine would be the right choice, please provide a website that you trust. (If there's a link for a thread that has already addressed this, and I happened to miss it, please send it to me aswell.)

Thanks alot.

Rebuild > JDM

Motor of questionable milage, age, and condition compared to a motor with 0 miles on it... JDM motors are great if you're going to buy it for a core to rebuild (especially in the case that your core is screwed, like a thrown rod).

You don't know how long a JDM motor has sat. Also the 7M's over time with there iron block can rust very badly. I have seen some come here and when someone took it apart it was horrid. Someone on this forum post pic's before. Rebuild for sure. At least you know what you're getting.

thanks alot for your input. Sounds like rebuild is a much better idea. However, im fairly pressed for money, as im only 16. would it also be cheaper in the long run to rebuild the 7m?

also, any thoughts on the 2jz?

Lol, I have a feeling that it'll be cheaper to rebuild.

MUCH cheaper to rebuild the 7m in the long run if done CORRECTLY! Call a few of our vendors and have them do a stock rebuild. Most will have a core already and you'll probally pay right at or a bit more then a jdm motor after shipping. Worth it to start fresh imho.

Definately a rebuild of what you currently have. You have no idea what the condition of the JDM motor is. They can even lie about mileage. Even to this day I don't believe that all these engines have 30-40k miles.
You also don't know how long it's been sitting, you atleast already know what you have wrong with your engine.
And if your tight on money don't even thing of a 2JZ, from what I've seen a descent 2JZ swap lays around 5-7k depending on what's needed. So no 2JZ for you yet.
