I keep thinking about this so I thought I'd see if you guys can give me some good advice.
I am a Electrical/Electronic Engineer working as a Project Engineer involving mostly Mechanical Engineering.
The field I work in is Communcations...designing, manufacturing, testing of composite satellite reflectors (dishes). I dont mean the small DISH Network or Comcast ones. We make reflectors ranging from 6" - 200". some have been even bigger. These contracts are for the US Military, British Aerospace, Israeli
Military. done jobs for Lockheed, Northrup Grumman and lots of other aerospace companies, universities and overseas companies.
I have worked here for 4 years now and have never complained about a pay rise or anything at all to my employer. All the other employees have asked for pay raises.
I got hired as an engineer and from the every start my goal was to know everything in this business. So I would finish my own work and go help the guys in the workshop to pick their brains and learn it all or learn and do my own research work at work after work hours.
But mainly, I do the part of the design work with my boss, I do the drafting and all the programming for our machines to machine the reflectors, I do all the engineering quality checks for the products going out and sign my name of the Certificate of Conformance...so all our customers will know about me. I am able to do all the work the guys in the workshop and factory floor do confidently. I have proven this in the past when some employees were sick and on vacation and I work on some products from start to finish and sent it out...no complaints from the customers.
I think my efforts to learn everything about this work has paid off and i am very confident that I could do this on my own prefectly.
My boss entrusts me with alot of the work because he trusts me alot and he lets me handle important documents. I have been very helpful to him.
My employer has been very sick lately mainly due to his old age (80 yrs old)
and he seldom comes to the company and lets me run it and organize everything. i just call him at home to update him on everything.
My pay is okay...I used to work 2 part time jobs as well but I quit those.
I know if I look for employment elsewhere I would get alot more money.
My boss is a very good person. He is multi millionaire and at times when business is slow he does not lay off anyone working on the factory floor or workshop. He is alone but not lonely...He has no family or relatives of any kind...no family..He did not marry....
My question is :
Should I talk to my employer about his company and let him know that I would be interested in buying his business when he choses to let it go because of his old age?
I would offer him a deal maybe like he could stay at home and I run everything and when I need his advice I could call him and give him a monthly salary although he does not need it.
What do you guys think?
Cheers,
Roy
