Okay since Im not in a financial situation to fix it or have the time right now to check where its leaking from...(please god let it be from the high pressure hose...) What would happen if I took the PS pump belt off?

I did it to a mustang(1968 mind you....) today as it was screwey and all it felt like to me was.. A car without power steering.

Any detrimental side effects and how would i go about removing this belt? Im gonna do a search now.

I drove mine for three weeks with the power steering belt disconnected, until i could replace the rubber hose coming off of the reservoir...just felt like I had no power steering (a BITCH to turn lol)...Replaced the hose, and put the belt back on...has been fine ever since.

Oh, and if you are going to drive w/ the belt off for a while...make sure you zip-tie it up and out of the way if you aren't going to take it off completely...I zip-tied mine to the power-sterring idle-up hardline.

I was just thinking that I wouldnt take it off because I diddnt wanna remove all my other belts. But I never thought of the zip tie manuver! Ill probably head that route.

The way to take it off is via tilting the pump by unscrewing two bolts that hold it on there is what I gather.

Correctamundo or wrong?

there are actually three bolts that you need to unscrew to move it...but the third one on the back of the pump is pretty much IMPOSSIBLE to get to...I just unscrewed the two (one in front, and one towards the side...). I just pulled the pump to the side as hard as I could and slipped the belt off carefully with a screwdriver...

As for zip-tying it..yea, that's definitely the easiest way to go...Just make sure that when you hang it, it isn't touching anything that moves, or you will have a huge mess on your hands ;).

So zip tie it in 2 spots? One away from the Crank and the other somewhere to keep it away from the crank? haha.

I drove a 68 mustang without PS today.... Whats the simmilarities between that car and this car? Other than seecksee?

i actually took my belt off today... b/c my pump is BAD and the power gain was to irresistable, so i imediately found a serated knife when i got home (it was dangling on the harmonic balancer, because i was trying to determin how bad it would be) it's not really an issue for me, but i did gain a good amount of power b/c the pump sounded like a supercharger :-/

I come from a land down under
There have been a few reports of the steering locking up mid corner when it's been bypassed.....

Guys go to a hydraulic hose repairer and get a new hose made it might cost ya $50 and if you can't afford that park the car for a week till you can :nono:

JJ: Just blows me away that the guys even contemplate ghetto fixes like this!

The Mk3 is a HEAVY Powerful bastard that even with the pwr Steer working right can be a handful on the edge I shudder to think of trying to drive it without it and even worse not Bypassed.....

As I said $50 for a hose or if they're broke broke get one from a junk yard till they can afford the $50..
