I'm painting my car

Yep, I was dumb enough to start sanding my entire car down a few weeks ago and I'm just about finished with the sanding process. It's only 1:00pm and I'm about ready to pass out, wow I'm tired. Most of the body has been gone over with 400 grit and a DA air sander which was fun and easy enough. The hard to reach areas I have been doing by hand. I've painted car parts before, but never had to go into doing an entire car. Wow this is WORK. Anyway, once I have her all taped up this evening I'm hoping to go over some spots with my eastwood 2K primer( I messed up and took it down to the metal on a few areas). Once I'm done there, I'll let it dry and hit it with base coat. I have 1/2 a gallon of base and 1/2 a gallon of clear. After primering my rear bumper and my friends Acura's front bumper last night I have a feeling I will need a lot more clear. I might be able to manage the entire car with the base paint but I'm scepcital already. I might make a thin batch of primer to make gun adjustments with prior to shooting my base so I don't over do it and go empty on base paint. I'm also not shooting my front or rear bumpers. I need to replace my front bumper entirely and do more bondo work to my rear bumper(jackass at work rear ended my supra when I was on laps of insurance so I didn't make a claim). I'm going stock with the base, 4H1 which is doo doo brown. I want to go sleeper with my supra so I might as well stick with the doo doo brown. I decontaminated my paint booth, aka garage with drapes, twice now. The primer last night made a serious mess on the over spray. I don't have much choice but to pull my car out one more time and decontaminate again once I finish the final sanding. I just finished the center trim section(removed the stupid double sided tape) with 180 grit. I'm taking a short break to wash clothes and I'll wash the car in my garage next to get all the dust off again. The only other thing I need to remove is the passanger side door handle. Everything else has been stripped and WOW this car has a lot of stuff to remove. I shot a body kit, fenders for an eclipse and prelude before and it feels like there's just TONS more work on the MKIII than either of those cars. I'm also about to format the memory card on my camera to take before and after pics. I hope to at least get the base coat done tonight. So I guess this is my potential "keep everyone updated thread."

On that note, any experienced painters here that think 1/2 gal clear coat is going to be enough to cover a few layers on the MKIII? I usually eat through clear coat the fastest and I'm seriously doubting 1/2 gal is enough for two to three coats.

Nope not enough clear for me. I'm not even sure you have enough color, but I like to have extra.
Check my build thread, toward the end. I just painted my truck.

Can you come paint my car??!! :naughty:

Mine took 3 quarts of base and a gallon of clear, depends if your doing jams, underside of hood, etc too though. I had 2 pretty heavy coats of clear.

I'm going the entire car minus front bumper and rear bumper(my rear bumper needs a lot more work). No jams, not shooting underside of the hood either. I removed the door handles and mirrors as well. Each time I think I'm ready to do touch up with the primer I keep finding more sh*t to sand. I'm trying to do the best I can sanding all imperfections(rock chips, scratches). I have two more door dings to fill and sand down after they dry/harden.

I'd like to add a deep gloss/clear coat look. The last time I shot clear I think I was tremendously fortunate. I could run my hand across my front bumper and it was smoother than a baby's ass without polishing/buffing the surface. I'd like to apply that same technique so ya'll have convinced me, I'm going to get a gallon of the stuff i used last time.

Back to the garage, for more sanding...oh yea, how many of you shot your car yourself? I'm assuming all that replied did. Just curious, may lead to further questions :D

Happy sanding.

Haha, thanks! I have primer/sealer which I'm going to use on the car prior to putting down base paint. I have most of it sanded down to the stock base coat, as the car was still running on it's OE paint job. As mentioned I made a few mistakes which require primer/sealer to fix up again. I'm going to check out your thread in a bit.

Thanks,

E
