I'm hearing a whine and rushing sound under a load. What is it?

All i found was a dead-end thread and, this quote from the you know you own a N/A when thread ; "you know you're a N/A owner when your friends notice a bit of a whine and you have to tell them its not a turbo spooling....but you wish it was." Is this common?

I notice a whine coming from my engine bay under acceleration, namely under a heavier load while accelerating. It's faint when i accelerate slower. The tone of the whine goes up with RPM, and it is LOAD dependent. If i accelerate at a steady rate and then push it harder the noise gets louder based on throttle input. Let off while going the same speed and the whine disappears. I have heard a little differential whine too i think, but i can definitely tell this is coming from in front of me.

I mentioned my problem before in another related thread and a replied possible problem was the steering pump, but pushing the gas pedal harder won't effect that...this is RPM and load dependent...

I also sometimes cruise in 5th gear around 40 mph, and the other day i pushed the pedal down hard to see how my car would pull in 5th going that slow. (yay torque) I heard the whine still, but now I also heard a kind of hiss-like rushing. It's not the gushing waterfall sound, it almost sounds like air. I'm not sure how to describe it. I was stressing the engine doing that, but the sound...confused me.

Any ideas? :1zhelp:

Fan clutch, maybe? Trans. fluid is full? Pinion bearing whine will travel, and can sound like its coming from the center or front of the car.

hmm. but it gets louder if i apply the throttle harder. how could the power steering do that?

I need to change my transmission and diff fluid. maybe this weekend i'll see about doing that since my dash is out and see if some car noises don't disappear.

fan clutch - maybe...like i said it can vary with throttle application and not just RPM. so say i'm going at 2k RPM and i hit the throttle, the whine will get louder immediately before the engine actually gains RPM's...

now i would not doubt that it's my transmission...i didnt think much about that. thanks.

You might check for a dirty air filter as well. You don't have one of those "Tornado" things, do you?

hahah....no. no tornado. I do have a split intake hose at the throttle body though. however I would imagine that if that was sucking in air and making such a noise, it would do it other times like when i get in high rpm's without lugging down the engine.

through the stock filter i should just be able to see light through it right?

You should be able to see light through it, yes. If you can knock a lot of dust out of it, or its been a while, I'd change it anyway. Cheap maintenance. If you had a K&N or the like, I would suspect it for whistling. The split intake hose will give you idle and drivability issues, as it will get unmetered air through there. I think I'd check idler/tensioner pullies as well. Maybe one has a bad bearing? Check the alternator and a/c comp. as well.
