I just had the bottom end rebuilt in my 89 turbo. ACL bearings and a new crankshaft. I am running 15w50 mobil one full synthetic. He said that its not the best break in oil, but it shouldnt be a problem. True? Should i change my oil? I have 100miles on the bearings now. Thanks in advance.

IJ is going to tell you that you should use straight 30W with no friction modifiers or fancy additives in order for the rings to seat properly.

but i just beat him to it ;)

What he said ^ ;)

No way would I run Synthetic in a brand new motor, I can't really advise on a course of action now as I've never been in your position sorry.

I'm not really sure if 100 miles is enough to have glazed the bores or not.

Brad: It's really funny it's like Mk3's are synched to have the same issues at the same time, one week it'll be Cooling then another it'll be Ignition breakup then yet another it'll be Trans issues and so on!

It's very rare that it's just one car having a problem all on it's own!

At the moment it seems to be the old faithful BHG rearing it's ugly head!
(joined in but mine was self inflicted when I should have known better)

ummm.. i don't really know what IJ is going to say, but i would go with Valvoline Max Life Synthetic here..

but i'm biased because my dad worked for the parent company of Valvoline for 22 years :D

So what happens when I use synthetic to break in bearings? Am i screwed? Should I just leave it be? Are these bearings gonna go out in a couple thousand miles?

P.S. My best friend is a Jet mechanic, so he only charged me $300 for installation! Im just worried because i dont want to have to have him do it again in a couple thousand miles.

the issue isn't the bearings, it is the rings seating properly.. synthetic is too slick and wont let the rings put the proper pressure on the cylinder walls for them to seal.

i see many references saying that the rings seat like 80% within the first 20-40 miles and the rest over the rest of the break-in.

i don't really know, but my feeling is that it may be too late for you.. at the same time i don't think it will HURT anything to switch to 30W for a while.. say another 50-100 miles? just in case there is still a chance..

take this with a grain of salt because its mostly speculation on my part.

The bearings are not what you need to worry about...it's the rings seating correctly in the cylinders. Change it to a straight 30W Valvoline and run it to flush the synthetic...change it again (and filter) to the 30W. Hopefully the rings will seat.

After about a 1000 miles, you can go to synthetic...you don't need 50W oil on a new motor. Do a search on oil...been beat to death. I'm reading the new Penzoil Platimum is good stuff.

Well i didnt change the pistons, i dont even think they came out. The new crankshaft was put in 3000 miles ago along with new rod bearings. My buddy said i should put new main bearings in as well,...having 140,000 on them and all. So i bought new rod and main bearings and had him throw them in this past weekend. He unbolted the engine, lifted it up and threw new bearings in it. Dont think the pistons were even taken out.

what about royal purple synthetic?

quotes would be helpful to keep things at least understandable when hijacking a thread ;)

anyway, lots of people get a boner over royal purple.. personally i don't get it.. maybe it really is great amazing stuff, but so what? consistent oil changes (on time) with quality synthetic (valvoline, mobile 1, amsoil, royal purple, insert name here) is all that really matters.. if you want to pay extra for something, go for it, it's your car :)

IJ probably repsonded but I will harp in here also

You DO NOT BREAK IN BEARINGS!!

If you are breaking in bearings you are WEARING them down and that is not good ;)

You break the piston RINGS in.
