Other than the peg leg burn outs, how would you know if your LSD went out?

Last night at the track, they were sayin I was doing peg leg burn outs... *only my passenger side tire was smoking* When I watched the video, it looked like both were spinnin to me, just one side wasnt smoking... Its hard to tell on video, cuz my car was movin forward... On my last run, I did a serious standstill burn out and both sides smoked...

But IF my LSD was out, or going out, or whatever, how would I know? I would think it would drive funny or make noises?

Any thoughts?

Thats what I would think too... Im hopin they were f'n with me... *they were my friends after all, lol* But yeah, a grinding, or a pop or something would have been heard, or maybe a continuous noise?

Has anyone ever busted an LSD? Or broken an axle?

I mean, whe have guys making over 600 hp on stock rear ends, right?

When mine went out in the MK3 it didn't make any noises -- it just would spin the right wheel only. When the LSD started to go out in the MK2, it would act like an open diff then make a loud "clunk" before acting like a LSD...

Anyway, bottom line is your diff is worn. A used diff will cost ~$80-$200 and roughly $80 to ship. An aftermarket LSD will cost ~$900-$1200 plus the cost of a rebuild (and bearings/seals)

^ if both tires spin the same way, you're good to go. although I'd suggest an aftermarket lsd, better quality, and can take uber horsepower, also gaurentees(sp?) brand new clutches. Kaaz sells one for the mk3 for around $800, IIRC

When I blew one up, it made ugly noises, but ran fine, for quite a while - nearly a year. Then it started binding while I was driving, that was ugly.

The other symptom was how far I could rock the car back and forth when parked on a flat surface with the engine in gear and the E-brake off. Normally driveline slop gives you a few inches of movement - when my rear diff was badly screwed up, it would move nearly a foot.

Even though when mine went it made no noises, it just stopped locking. When I drained it, the fluid was full of gold flakes. I figure the diff part was still fine, but one clutch lost it's material. I didn't pull it apart, but just bought a used one from the junkyard, so I don't know exactly what happened..

The clutch pack can wear out, fairly common on high mileage units. Leave one rear wheel on the ground and see if you can spin the other one with the transmission in neutral and the hand brake off. It should take a significant ammount of effort, if you can do it at all by hand. If it spins easily, rebuild or replace.

I'm getting a clunk right now, I put it on a lift and a guy said it was coming from the lsd. I want to burnout to test it, but I've got new tires. I'll let you know how it goes.

grim, with you saying that, im wandering sence urs ran for a year, did it make any not whining but like low sound grinding/gurgling when in a certain gear?
when i hit 5th mine does this, its not loud but a weird sound coming from the back of the car, im pretty sure its coming from the lsd.

I called the local toyota dealer for a rebuild kit awhile back and they didnt know what I was talking about... it took me awhile to explain to them, and they still didnt have it, where can I get new clutchpacks?
