I see no point in dumping effort into a turbo system at this stage when I can get to 400 FWHP with bolt ons...

FWHP?

Otherwise I support the idea as a whole. ITB's on a v8, there are few things that sound better than that...

Yes... Flywheel Horsepower :) And that 400hp is based on a similar build seen at THIS LINK . After a custom intake manifold, ITB's, some equal length headers, and high compression, I expect to do considerably better. My main goal for the 302 is 400hp at the rear wheels. Once that is accomplished and seems to be getting "boring", stage 2 will begin to take place.

This could be a cool build, but why not use the 351 rather than the 302? Arnt they basically the same block size? Just a thought, Im by no means a ford expert.

I had an F250 with the 460 fuel injected engine. That thing was a beast! Now that would be an engine I would love to see put in a Supra... To bad your rear wheels would never be on the ground from the shear weight in the front of the car with that engine...

I actually have been also considering an 351. It is a stronger block and capable of handling 600hp with stock internals. I already have a 302 which is why I'm going down this road though, so I might build the 302, run it until something blows up, and then build a 351. They share the same bellhousing bolt pattern and engine mounts. The only real difference is the deck height of the 351 which I think is like an inch taller. No big deal. I would consider the 351 "Stage 2" when forced induction is introduced.

I agree..the 460 would be an amazing motor to cram in there, but not practical from a streetability and handling performance standpoint. The thing I love about the 302 is that it is the same weight as the 7M, but shorter, bringing the center of mass closer toward the center of the car. The 351 is about 60 lbs heavier than the 302, so when the time comes that will need to be accounted for.

Still doing rust repair currently....it's starting to get me down :(

You probably won't notice 60lbs extra on the nose if the engine sits further back, from a balance perspective. :)

Too true. Too Very True. I might just sell the 302 I've got and pick up a 351 which I've had my eye on. Both need a rebuild, so at this point the build is apples to apples.

Plus, 500hp N/A from a well built 351 does sound pretty good for "Stage 1"

Good lord.

Could you get a cheap LS1?

I could, but only the purchase of the engine would be potentially "cheap"....everything else would cost 3 times as much. I like the small block Ford powerplants for a couple reasons. #1 is cost. They are a dime a dozen, make great power, and have tons of reasonably priced aftermarket support. #2 is the package. The distributor is in the front meaning you can cram the whole engine as far back as possible. (I know an LS doesn't have a distributor in the traditional sense, so this is kind of a moot point between a Windsor and an LS). They are not too heavy either, with the 351 with aluminum heads weighing under 500 lbs. The 302 with aluminum heads weighs less than a stock 7M. I do love the technology in the LS series of motors, but as I said, they are FAR more expensive to "hop up" with even the most basic bolt-on stuff. And at the end of the day, I've never been a GM guy...even if we're just talking about an engine block :)

I'd love to see a Supra with an LS motor, so maybe somebody else better get on this!

That is a smokin deal!

Too bad I enjoy the build as much as I do the drive, or this would be a no-brainer.

Thanks for the link.

I happened across a MKIII passing through my neck of the woods once with a...gasp....427 in it. The guy who owned it however was not at all what I would call friendly approachable or a community oriented type. But whom ever did the work, it look really nice. In the end really it's your car build it for yourself and the way you will enjoy it.

I've never been a "If it's not Toyota it's shit" kind of person. HP is HP, if your making it and it's usable it hardly matters if the power is made through a I6, V6, V8 or some fision powered rodent that's painted green under the hood.

Although.....I wouldn't want to lose a race to a green rodent powered car really. That would just be really upsetting. Maybe even more upsetting than losing to a Lada.

I plan on putting a Sonic the Hedgehog sticker somewhere on my car, it's a blue rodent, does that count? :icon_bigg
