now i know that there is a carbofiber shortage right now but maybe later I was thinking about buying a carbonfiber hood and cutting out the top of the cowl and pop riviting some plexyglass in there. I dont know about everyone else but i think it would look cool but my question is would this weaken the hood too much is there a way to do it without weakening it?

then once theres a window in your hood, you need blacklights and LED's in the engine bay, and hoses that glow in UV.

but seriously..
It might look cool, I agree that its not worth doing to a CF hood though. Maybe you could split it up into 2 or three seperate windows to keep some metal in between for strength. Or if you used thick enough plexiglass you wouldnt have a problem with strength. What about it melting though?

took me 2 tries to understand your first post. please dont do this regardless if its a CF, FG, or stock metal. i cant imagine this ending well overall unless the car is strictly for show dont do it.

Are the carbon fiber hoods that strong to begin with? I know that CF is strong, but i thought once you lost the stock hood you lost alot of that strength with it?

About how hot does it get at its hottest point? There's a clear plastic called Lexan that can take a butane torch and not melt. It was fugly afterwards but that was because of the flame not the heat. Bulletproof at 1/4"

Polycarbonate (Lexan is again a trade name) has it's own set of problems. For example you might assume polycarb would be used in aircraft windscreens but it usually isn't. There are many variations of transparent acrylics and polycarbs, as well as other polymers, each with varying properties. It's why my point about knowing a material before use still stands. For example Lexan in it's basic form is susceptible to UV degradation although you can get it coated on one side to prevent it. Then there is the question of bonding it correctly. The typical method of solvent bonding wouldn't work on CF and mounting using hardware requires special practices such as oversized holes to allow for expansion. Not to mention drilling the stuff requires a specialized bit to avoid stress risers and cracking.

I also think it's a dumb idea but it's his car so he can do with it as he wishes. You should see what I'm going to do to mine when the time comes to get rid of it. As nice as it is it's probably going to die a spectacular death in front of thousands of people. I'd rather see that happen than have it hacked up by someone who'd put a clear piece of plastic in the hood or some other weird mod.

i remember that hideous gold MK4 in Fast and Furious II had used a clear material to show off the motor. a import car magazine did a couple of runs with it,and it started to melt.

any way the wind blows
from wikipedia on 2 fast 2 furious.

"For Slap Jack's Supra, a custom hood was made, featuring a plexiglas panel that revealed the chrome engine underneath. For the stunt doubles of this car, a photograph of the engine was taken and blown up to full scale, then placed underneath the panel."

ha cool.

I am not sure if I'm going to do it or not, but i have seen completely clear hoods, but never known what they where made out of.I thought it was plexyglass of some kind and the car was driven regularly. I just thought it might be kind of interesting to see the cowl clear because that happens to be right where the engine sits, so you would have a clear view of it.

I deff. would test fit on a stock hood before i did a carbon fiber hood.

I know that plexyglass is a brand name but it's easier for me to type as I don't know how to spell the real name and it is hard for me to learn new words because I'm dyslexic (Sp? and not an excuse i know)

Basically I could go out buy a carbon hood, cut up the stock one, and not like the look (prob. what will happen). So I would just put the carbon hood on the way it is.

you know this is suppose to be a group of friends not a place where everyone puts down on one guys idea. you never know you guys might like it after he is done. so how about you guys take all your put downs how you guys don't like it and hold them in to your self and say something like (i can wait to see what it looks like) instead of making him feel like a complete fool for even saying it. Sorry guys but i had to say it because i felt like you guys where being a little harsh on someones idea. Everyone has different taste in car style.
