I am new here...my name is chris..whats up guys??

i bought a 88 supra turbo for drift purposes and...it has a lack of power.
Code says bad TPS and knock sensor....so iam getting the TPS replaced...was told by toyota tech. a bad tps will throw the knock off. I am wondering what else it can be...no major leaks in intercooler piping that i can see...there is a small exhaust leak...but i know thats not doing it..its turbo lol and i dunno. I hesitates like it isnt getting enough fuel...or Air...but the turbo is spooling...idles great...startsa lil rough...but she gets going. So i dunno. help will be appreciated.thanks guys!!!!:1zhelp:

I don't have much advice for that other than check for boost leaks. The thing that did catch my eye is that you bought it for drift purposes...

Ignore anyone who flames you for that but please, take all the necessary maintenance steps before beating on the car, these are old cars and do have few flaws that must be addressed before putting the engine through too much abuse.

The search button will be your best friend and when your car's ready for it it will take the abuse, but don't jump out of the game if your motor goes poop because it was starved of oil or the headgasket is junk.

The hesitation that you speek of could be do to the knock problem. If the knock sensor triggers, the computer pulls out timing from the ignition. This cause a lose of power but a side effect is that retarded timing actually cause the turbo to spool better cause of the rise in EGT.

TPS causing knock sensor issue, not that I have ever seen or heard of. Not sure where he is getting that from. Are you getting a code 52? A very common problem with the MKIII Supras is the knock sensor wiring and is the most common cause of the code 52.

If you search, you will fine a lot of good info about rewiring the knock sensors.

I know where he isn't getting that info from, Toyota. I don't think he is a Toyota tech. Maybe oil changes or something and is bullshitting you at your expense.

Thanks guy...yea i know about turbo lag..etc...it idels fine, and like, i dunno...it just...lags and sputters a lil bit and hesitates. No boost leaks that i could find, has exhaust leak at the embow...but yea code 52...tps and knock sensor..posible MAF...i dunno...but thanks guys! yea i may have to re-wire the knock sensors...:aigo:

try recalibrating your TPS... start there instead of buying something new.

and your Knock sensor could be fucked up. if you have a knock sensor code, the ecu pulls timing back to base and wont advance it thru the rpm range, which is the reason why your car feels lke it has no power.

Boost leaks are actually very hard to "see" and if you have stock IC plumbing it's very likely you have at least one leak and likely multiple leakers. There are so many weak areas in the stock pipes it's not even funny...well I guess it could be depending on your perspective.

And yeah, if you're going to drift your supe (or any car really) you should start with a solid platform and PLAN on things breaking. Just the nature of the beast.

I had the TPS ohmed out or w/e...it was bad...and i got one from a junkyard and it was bad too..but anyway...iam sure its the knock senors. thanks for the help!

The tps code is gone by the way and i went around with ( iam a hvac tech.) with air dust leak detector stuff with the car running and gass applied etc etc. and saw no air leaks. and if there was one i missed...it isnt bad enough for the engine to be doing what its doing. Def a knock Sensor prob. which it seems everyone has had. thanks again guys!!

yea anything can be drifted if you try hard enough. learn with something hard like the supra and that 240sx will seam like a peice of cake lol. When i was down in portland for a formula race they where drifting that weekend in the outer parking lot. the supra really did well. dont know anything about the driver but his mk3 was working good for him. Anyway they are right make sure you car is up to par for any kind of beating you going to throw at it drift or otherwise.and welcome.:icon_surp

So i got the car back from the shop....New TPS...said the knock sensors still throwing code...but..it has POWER NOWWW!!! and it doesnt bog down and or hesitate...it does start a lil rough....but other than that runs 10 TIMES better!!!!:aigo:

yes, high G driving will cause problems if you dont stay ON TOP Of your oil level. just ask Idealsupra how he found out.

the MK3 can drift just fine. ive done it and so has my friend. hes actually building a turbo 87 right now to drift at events with. he's currently the driver of "the Bandit" for XAT racing. if you guys are familiar w/ drifting and the D1GP, you might have seen it before. he had an article done on him in some drifting magazine too.

the MK3 will initiate and drift just fine. the only REAL problem it has due to its weight is the transitioning into combination corners like Esses and such... or the "inertia drift" where you get the car sliding back and forth down the straightaway. aside from that, its just as easy as drifting a full-weight S14 or S15, or SKyline GTS-T.
