Hey guys, well today i cleaned my block and installed all of the core plugs. Do you need to use any type of sealer on the core plugs?

i do some times...depends on condition of block and what plugs... and how they go in.. if they go in a tad to easy... then yes i deg put something on them.. usally yellow 3m... seams to work well...

but if you didnt dont worry.. unless they went in easy...... fastest way to burn a motor down is to have all the coolant leak out in 5 seconds... not like a blown hose or something... hole in rad.. freeze plug pop it goes real quick..

yeah, i've installed them 100% dry and zero problems... most machine shops like to use a sealer just because. but yea, just make sure you install them correctly and they were nice and tight.

Ok, so all of them took A LOT of effort to get in.... but final verdict: good as long as they are tight? One other question, may sound dumb but could i put something like blue RTV around the countersunk ring around the outside of the plug just to be sure? Is there any way to test if they leak before assembly?

O and how do you guys install yours? i did a big socket, with an old crappy extension. the socket was big enough to go around the outer lip of the plug?

RTV after = waste of time

I use #4 aviation permatex as it allows me to install with 1>3 hits and this is very important in that many small hits remove the crush/interference fit of the plug and they can pop out.

30+ years of doing it this way I've NEVER had one leak or fail.

thanks I.J., after listening to you and talking it over with one of my friends, im going to pull them all, and use sealent. I'm doing everything i can on the first full rebuild of the powertrain on a vehicle, to have peace of mind. I would be a very bad person to be around if i were to get the motor in, running good, and have one leak!:3d_frown:
