Taking off those plastic things.

there's a bolt with a jam nut sticking out of the back of the a-arm or the knuckle (I forget, it's been a few years since I've been under a mkiii. I completely removed the bolt, but I guess if you're worried about your rack, I'd just tighten them down a little.
