I need some input from the community

My poor supra has been sitting in my back yard for 2 years now with no motor. My wife has agreed that since we need a second car up and running that I can spend the money to put it back together. I don't have a huge budget, and my current build plans require about $6000 to finish it, plus about 100 hours of work. So I got to looking for a used 7MGTE that I can just drop in to get it on the road. I have tried all the usual sources first ie, here and other forums. I have also looked into the world of "JDM Engine Importers" And this is were I need your advice.... I have found a freat price on a "low mileage" JDM 7MGTE ~ 50,000 miles or so they say. the site I have found it from is this:
http://www.jdmenginedepot.com/jdm_engine_details/72/Toyota_Supra/Cressida_7MGTE

Now I called them up and spoke with a very english impared individual, that qouted me $950 for a motor. Price is ok by me. My concern is the reputation of this company, and for that matter if there is another supramania supporter that I could deal with instead. Keep in mind this place is only 2.5hours from my house, so I could pick it up and save shipping.

Thanks to all that read this, as I am very anxious to get the old girl on the road again.

You'd be buying a 17+ year old performance engine that has known issues/problem areas don't expect to just bolt it in and have reliability...

I am fully aware of that fact. I have a full gasket set in my possesion, and rings, and bearings. I'de prolly do a freshen up on it before it goes in, at bare minimum pull the oil pan and valve covers to check it out, plasti gauge it and what not. but my concern is this JDM hype crap. Is there really an advantage, or is this just hype? And also the reputation of this company.

I dont think he has a motor IJ. but ya your taking a chance both ways a jdm engine may have low miles but has been siting for 10 years. as for the jdm-ness the
oil pressure sensor
throttle body (if you have egr, jdm engines don't have egr)
various sensors on the engine
and Coolant Rail are different
i think the rest is identical

I'd find a motor locally before I'd run a JDM motor (in fact I did that years ago LOL)

I have a motor ( or peices of one :3d_frown: ) but It is missing a lot of things to get it running. I tore it down 2 years ago with the goal of pushig 700 rwhp on the 7M. So I sold the factory turbo, AFM, harness, manifolds, etc. I was planning on going AEM EMS, with all aftermarket performance parts. so for me to buy all these parts and pay for the machine work to be finished, would be well into the $3000+ range. My budget is only about $1200 - 1500. I thank you all for your input and you have all been a great help. As for finding a motor locally, they don't seem to exist. Unless someone reading this has a full 7m turbo engine laying around??? HINT HINT :biglaugh:
What I really need is a front clip, but can't find one of those either.

I have a 98% assembled usdm 1989 turbo motor with "believed" rod knock....I'm not too excited about letting it go as it only has 70,000 miles (me and Iwantmkiii pulled the motor from a car he purchased as he had a built one already)....for the right price a may could let it go.

I live in Philly.

If the engines are identical, then is the H.P. indentical????. The E.G.R. couldn't have that much H.P. advantage.

Why not get a 1jz? Almost the same price and even though they may both be coming from an unknown source, the 1jz is stouter so you're less likely to run into problem motors.

Not true, it's still the same age, just as abused, and probably been sitting outside being rained on. Not to mention a lot more money to get everything to swap it.

In that case he's better off getting a 2J from a local junkyard and going NA-T.

And to all that gave their input, thank you. I believe I'm going to pick up a "JDM" motor and freshen it up quick. Then all the little kids at school will think I'm cool....... :biglaugh: To clarify, I recentley started attending classes at a local college, and It's a culture shock.... I've been out of high school way too long. These are the people that thing throwing an AutoZone wing on thier car makes it a race car, you knnow the type. God Damn Kids! ok now my ranting is done. for now :icon_evil
