I Need Some Good Sound!!!

I've been looking into upgrading the sound system on the Supra. It's a targa so there won't be much room in the trunk. I have no clue what's good or what isn't. I know with speakers you get what you pay for so I have no problems with spending some money to get good sound.

I'm getting the AVIC-D3 soon so I hope that's a good start. I listen to mostly rock, classic rock (led zep, kansas, rush, etc.), and A LITTLE BIT of tasteful rap lol.

I'm not looking for the bass to hit hard but I would like to put the cars with their shitty systems to shame. :sarcasm:

So a little help and guidance would be appreciated.

6.5" door speakers. Upgraded rear speakers and a 10" sub with a decent 200-300W amp should get you a decent sound.

short of the 6.5 door speakers thats what I had and it was a kick ass setup that was totally stealth. No need to go crazy to get good sound.

Some 6.5 components up front, set of 4" mids for the rear (not full range speakers), a 4 channel amp, and then a small 10" sub and ~300w rms amp for it and you should be plenty satified.

Now what components you go with is up to you. You have a good head unit to start with, so now you have to decide just how much you can spend on everything else. I would say a decent syatem would run you about ~$1200-$1500.

Umm... very basic. Over rated, poor sound quality, and poor build quality. Not THE worst, but nothing great either.

What kind of budget are you on? If you on a bit of tighter budget, i would say look at alpine, kicker, rockford fosgate, polk, infinity, and MTX as they are the major main stream companies and can give pretty good sound for someone on a tighter budget.

If an unlimited budget is in order, take a look at focal, RE audio, FI audio, Audison amps, Morel, Image dynamics, Boston acoustics, JL audio, CDT... this list goes on and on! lol

Not tight, but not unlimited either, lol. It's tight right now though, because of my RHD swap and my bills are catching up with me. In about a month I'll be back to spending like crazy. Which means suspension, paint, and stereo, not necessarily in that order.

Now, if I get the 6.5" speakers for the front, some 4" or 5" for the rear, a couple of 10" subs, and an amp would I need an upgraded alternator/battery?

It's a controversial topic, but I would suggest running NO rear fill. It's going to be cheaper, and will ultimately sound better.

With the small system you are piecing together, no you shouldnt need a new alternator, but a nice battery will always be a good choice to run with. It will benefit more than just the stereo, and is cheaper and easier than a big alternator... And if i may make a recommendation on some subs, i had the chance today to listen to a very nice sq setup in a VW jetta and the guy was running 2 10" ED shallow mounts in the trunk. And to be honest, they sounded WAY better than i expected! But he did have a very high end active crossover set up. So im sure that helped.

I was actually looking for some shallow speakers. How big of a box do those need to be in? And what would be a good amp to match to those speakers? And what is a rear fill? lol. I'm new to this stuff so sorry about the n00b questions.

I am running stock rear speakers (89) 1 12" sub and Infinities in the doors. I am running the sub on a 15 year old Harmon Kardon 150 watt Amp the rears on a newer 200 Watt MTX Amp and the fronts on a 21 year old 125 watt Sony Amp. It sounds real good. has good bass for White Zombie or Yello also sounds good with Pink Floyd as well as Van Halen. you should be able to look up the requirements of the speakers you want online as far as what the specs are for the enclosures. and remember a sealed box requires less space than a ported box but a ported box will produce more sound. Mind you I'm not going to win any competitions but I can kill small rodents trapped in the car and it sounds good. well sounds good to me and thats all that matters

Your rear speakers.

If you're looking to build a system that sounds nice, not just "loud", ditch everything in the back (well, aside from a sub of course). All that the rear speakers are going to do is pull your sound stage back.

A lot of people say they want the sound to "surround" them, and thus think they need speakers behind them to accomplish this. A properly setup pair of speakers in the font WILL surround you, and WILL be a lot less "vague" as to where various sounds are located in space. You will perceive the sounds coming at you with a lot more detail regarding where they were located when first recorded.

Rear speakers only send your brain conflicting information. (well, unless you really want to be creative with time alignment and filtering)

Take the money you would have spent on front and rear speakers, and buy a good set of fronts, and a decent amp to power them. Even a small amp will sound a whole lot better than running them off the head unit.

With speakers, yes you do get what you pay for, to a point, but MOST of the difference is going to be installation. I've made shitty speakers sound good, and good speakers sound shitty. Deaden the doors, and make sure they're sealed. This will go a long way at making whatever you decide to put in the door, sound a lot better.

Alpine,Kenwood,JVC,are just a few good head units to look at.
You don't necassarily have to buy like components. I have a Kenwood head unit,Audiobahn 12"s,6.5's,OZ 4",

I'm an absolute audiophile and I've experimented with several speaker brands in the Supra.

Infinity Kappa Perfects in car = Klipsche Home Theatre speakers. (For anyone who's into the Home Theatre/Audio world) ...Best analogy I can make.

The clarity, quality & now so even the price all make this my speaker of choice in the A70.

There are a lot of other brands that people will argue to be "The best".
At this point in technology, there are a lot of "Bests"...But a lot of it is going to entirely depend on your setup.

ie. Brand A speaker sounds better than Brand B.
Now put an amplifier on both speakers, and suddenly, Brand B blows Brand A out of the water.
What kind of enclosure, the size of the speaker and even what kind of deck you're running will make everyones opinion right in one way or another why one brand is better than another.

dcru - For the music you listen to, I'd say it's key to find a speaker with lots of clarity...and not so much focus on it's bass output.
...Assuming you still want to fit in a small subwoofer.

Perfects are very good speakers, but hardly an audiophile material. They are very "bright" drivers. One peculiarity on an infinity line up is sound coloration. They make music sound a little brighter than it actually is. good stuff for techno, pop, trance. Club music. Although they might get tiring for some people after long periods of listening.
