okay well i had a few spare minutes at work this morning to pull it in the shop and get the timing light on it...although I only had time to look at it and make no adjustments.

Everything is timed correctly, but it isn't the way it was when I took the cam gears off. Does that mean I need to make an adjustment on the CPS since I haven't touched it yet? The previous owner must've advanced the timing to compensate for something.

spark's notes: Basically the cars timing was advanced to the 10 mark and I reset everything back to stock settings, although I didn't touch the CPS, so now my car runs shittier...do i need to adjust the CPS now or should I just advance the timing back to where it was?

Don't confuse cam timing with ignition timing.

For cam timing to be perfect, the motor has to be set with #1 CYL at top dead center. (0 degree on the timing indicator) and both cams gears need to have the hash marks on the pointed at the match marks on the back cover:

Once you are 100% sure you have that right, then mess with ignition timing.

You can make a real mess by trying to change too many things at once.

With that said, when you say everything is timed correctly, do you mean cam timing?

Are you saying your cam timing was advanced 10 deg or your ignition timing?

If ignition timing do you mean 10 deg beyond the stock setting, or at the 10 deg mark?

sorry this is my first time dealing with timing

I am 100 percent sure that my cam timing is setup correctly. However, I have yet to touch the ignition timing.

Does ignition timing have to be set according to cam timing or are they completely separate?

to put on your your cam gear and to take off these are the way's

use screw driver and put ti thorug the spokes and weg it on the back timing cover bolts

use some thing that will fit between the cam gears them selfs

actually the new seals are installed and the car is back together I'm just asking if I make a change to cam timing do I need to change the ignition timing as well?

edit: Well I went ahead and pulled out my CPS and aligned the marks on the gears and slid it back in, now I'm off to buy a timing light to make sure everything is as it should be...will let you all know on the results if anybody cares

ok car is back together although it still needs a bit more tweaking I managed to get the timing a bit closer and it's too late to pull the CPS and make the final tweak to it. Thanks all for the help!

actually I did have to pull it out in order to tweak the little gears position. Although you technically don't have to pull it all the way out to do this, it is much easier to take off the black plastic cap on the top of it when the CPS is completely removed from the engine.

I didn't read all of this thread, but..

I've noticed most of the supras I have been working on have been a hair off on one side or the other as far as lining up... I've never had a problem..

I would think the CPS is most likely to be the problem.

On the other hand, it could just be that you need a new timing belt, if it stretches slightly which could possibly happen with an old belt, your alignment will be a little off.
