I need a new coolant hose, does it matter what thickness?

I almost blew the coolant hose that runs from the heater core (connection on left side of engine bay) to the back of the engine just above the EGR cooler... i've asked about this before but not specifically...

what inner diameter and thickness would work the best? i'm going to take my hose in with me but i was checking to see if i needed to get one that is a different thickness or something since it wont be molded into the angle from the factory.

-just as another warning to anyone who thinks they can leave an old coolant hose on that is pinched by those stock wire clamps...dont do it.

i got SOOOO LUCKY!! i was worried this would happen.. today my hose finally started to loose it. i hoped it was just kinda loose when i first found the leak (small drip leak) but didnt tighten it for fear of cutting the hose right through. so i've left it on for weeks..

aaand two days ago when i got home it leaked much more than usual and dumped a bit of fluid on the exaust manifold right when i shut the car off to get the mail (mailbox is 1/4 mile from my house). i got back to the car and it began smoking...i thought OH SHIT my engine is going to catch fire (i saw a diesel truck do that after shutting off and smoking once). soo i rolled it down the hill to my house instead of starting it up and risking catastrophic coolant loss. there wasnt much loss and no overheat or anything...but the hose is probably cracked and ready to burst now.

so i have to fix it today.

Why not get one of the factory hoses? Don't pay the outrageous prices of your local parts counter though. Give Champion Toyota or Elmhurst Toyota a call. I got a hose with next day air shipping and it was less than the cost at the local parts counter.

ok...do parts stores sell hoses that are moulded/shaped to fit better than just straight hose from a big spool? if so i might get one...

If you are only buying one thing and its small, its not worth it. If you're buying a bunch of stuff thats pretty expensive then there are significant discounts to be had.

I replaced that hose with one from AutoZone (or was it Checker?), it was less than half the price and the wall is thicker. The hose is made by Goodyear and was a perfect fit (premolded). It's reinforced, of course.

how did they find the hose, was it a cross reference, or did you go in with the original and they found one that looked like it?

I'm In Canada and have ordered from them. If I have alot to order I get it from one of them. It's still cheaper even after shipping taxes and customs fees. My local dealer wanted around $500 for a full gasket set and $400 ish for an oil pump(Canadian funds)
I can't find the reciepts but Elmhurst/Champion was around $150 U.S. less, PER ITEM! So yeah, it's worth checking into.

I'm glad you got something together.

FYI - the hose was a replacement part, same wrapped plastic cover (to prevent rubbing against the firewall) mine had and all. It's identical to the Toyota labeled one I pulled out in shape, but thicker walled.

welllll shoot...

3/4 in hose is too large. i was doubtful, but it was fairly close and 5/8 looked smaller than stock....which might not go on. sooo it leaked before even starting the car.

i'm not sure if auto stores are open sundays. i hope so.

All of the auto stores around here are open on sundays. I'll run out to my car and see if my hose has the part number on it... if not it went with the sticker that I took off of it.

EDIT: well shit... That hose I got from Toyota. It's the driver's side hose that's the Goodyear hose (no number on it BTW).

lol. the first two words of your edit are amusing.

thanks a lot for checking. i'll try and figure out something tomorrow. buy 2 feet of the smaller size and if THAT doesnt work i'll hit up some other shops. Napa maybe. i dont like kragen for whatever reason.

i thought the hose would compress more but i guess since its stiff rubber it cannot contract enough and basically the clamp would get just as tight with nothing clamped inside the hose. i hate the physics of circles.

I'm sorry man, I really thought that was the hose I got aftermarket. I'd try NAPA if there's none to be had from Toyota locally. Good luck with it.
