Woke up this morn to change the plugs, and to check and retorque after my HG rebuild, LO and BEHOLD BHG!!!! I had a feeling something was up, but was in denial big time. I don't know the extent of the damage, but there was coolant in the oil, the heads up was when I pulled the crankcase ventiallation hose, and saw that creamy buildup. When I drained the oil, about 2 cups of coolant came out first, the the oil. The oil itself did not look to bad, like it had just happened. I need some advice: Should I just scrap this engine (140K) and buy a JDM and rebuild it? This would be HG #3 on this motor. Dammit!!! I haven't done a compression test on it yet, am doing that right now. Shit!! Oh well, time to build some real hp on the new build...

= / If the rest of your engine is good I would just change the HG because even if you were to buy a JDM engine you should still change the HG.

I have a 7M that I am looking to sell prior to my 1J swap. It does need valve stem seals because it smokes on startup. There is 212k on it, but it had new bearings, arps, and a MHG done by the previous owner around 60k miles ago. I drive it everyday, run the A/C, and it has been back and forth to NC with no problems. I have tried to kill it, but I cant. Compression was over 160 on all cylinders last time I checked it. LMK if you are interested. You can come look at it and ride in it prior to it being pulled.

So did you retorque the head bolts before you drained the oil? If yes, then how did you go about retorquing them?

your probably going to have to get a new motor if its the 3rd BHG ther has probably been alot of material removed from the head and block already

I never got to retorque, I was going to, thats how I found the BHG, when I was taking things apart.

I was at a friend's today (doing a motor swap) who is an import specialist, and he said that most JDM motors have MHG at least Honda's do, he wasn't sure about JDM Toyota though. Is there any truth in that for Toyota?

I think I am going to buy a JDM motor, do the swap, and then rebuild mine with a new head and some good hardware, and a bigger turbo, might as well.

The only inline 6 Toyota motors that have MHGs are the 1J and 2J motors. None of the 7M motors, USDM or JDM, came with a MHG from the factory. As I stated before, if you are looking for a temp motor that you can drive every day reliable, I have one. I am only looking to get $300 for the long block. It does have high mileage but it has a MHG with over 60k since the rebuild with no overheating. You could replace the valve stem seals with the head on and that would fix the smoking at startup. Cheap alternative while you rebuild your other motor.

You can get 3mm head gaskets... i doubt that.

If you think you installed everything correctly, could you possibly have a cracked head or block? How long did you drive it before retorquing?

I drove about 700 miles all local, and was taking it apart to do the retorque when I found the BHG.

The block is fine, the head is what I am worried about. My local high performance machine shop was booked out several weeks, and took it to someone he recommended. I think they did possibly what could be considered a "bad" job. I don't think the head is cracked either, just a bad deal. I am getting a motor from csnow. I am going to put that one in, and rebuild my motor or JDM with a newly build low mileage head, and some good hardware.

If its just the head, then don't get it skimmed too much - it's a bad idea. If the head is banana'ed, get a new (2nd hand) one that's known to be good. The thing with skimming a head, is if its banana'ed and you skim it true, then the cams are still going to be banana'ed - which is basically one way of getting your top end royally bollocksed.

Agreed. They said it was warped a little, and they skimmed it true. I will prolly re-use my block, build it, and get a new (2nd hand) head. My block has 140K on it. I am prolly going to build power this go-round anyways, I'll just fortify it with some heavy duty good stuff.

Just because you're wanting to get a "JDM" motor doesn't mean that it isn't a POS from being ragged on like any american 7M. If you can't use your old engine anymore, save some money and buy a local 7M and rebuild it according to your wants and needs power wise ;).

Yessir, I can get a JDM to my house for between 1000 and 1500, seems like to good deal for a motor with internals that have only 40K on them. besides the motors I am looking at have been compression and leakdown tested. That is not much money considering.

Dear God, please don't take the advertised mileage at face value! Soooooooo many people make this mistake! One of our members ordered a JDM 7MGE with the same amount of mileage, and it put down a horrible 140whp, that SUCKS even for a n/a! Be warned, is my only advice, seen too many people get screwed by engine importers.

Understood all, and thanks for the warning, however, I plan on a complete rebuild anyways with a bore and polish, and new stuff. I mean complete rebuild on the internals head included. The only stuff I'll keep is the bold on.

I am looking for a motor that has a solid block, and head, preferrably one that has not been taken apart before.

I'll go with a reputable company that my a buddys uses for his swaps. There are tons of hack jobs out there, selling garbage.

Thanks again for the advice.
