Hey guys,as i have owned this car bout 3 years now,it never ceases to amaze me how many people talk trash about this car.Ive traditionally owned american cars with a few exceptions, acura integra, eclipse, nissan 280z,and they were all good cars, this supra is by far my favorite, its well built, dependable, runs so smooth ya cant tell its idling unless ya watch the tach,i know its okd,not perfect but id drive it cross country in a heartbeat, just dont know why people trash this car so much,id say its a 5 star oldie, may even upgrade it at some point but it is a all round good machine.

Other than the relentless head gasket failure, I love this car too...
Nothing that good maintenance can't fix as I was already aware before my head gasket blew...

People never talk about my car but give it props... It is at least 20 years old and still better condition than new cars (no dents and good paint)...
Keep it well maintained as they will only become more rare...

Agreed. Some of it's the owner behind the car that gives them a bad rap also.

All it takes is a few loud idiots to give a car a bad rep. Look at the fool that wrote the infamous "ten reasons" page about this car. Half of the bad rep is probably fallout from that page.

I've never really had anyone talk crap (and be serious about it) after they've had a ride in it, or tried to race it...

Frankly, the only cars I've ever really enjoyed as much as my Supras have been the NB Miata I had (makes for a grown up version of a go-kart!), and a buddy's FC Turbo II Rx7 that was in as good of shape as I've ever seen one that actually gets driven. Other than that, even new cars pale in comparison to a good Supra in my eyes. :)

You guys are refering to this link for the 10 reasons page correct?
http://speedhero.wordpress.com/2010/09/06/10-reason-mk3-supras-are-garbage/

When I first read it, I was really shocked on how biased it was.. Even though I don't own an mark 3 yet, I am obessed with them! I saw one on the road last week and they look even better in real life.
I hope to own one next year after I save up enough money. But until then I plan to get as much information about the car I can from this forum and others

Supras are the best diet I've ever been on. I must have lost 30 lbs out of my wallet region alone... not to mention the hair I've pulled out!

Determining whether this is a good thing or a bad thing...but everything that is worth it comes with a price :biglaugh:

I started with an old 88 n/a car 5 years ago and other than a bhg, that thing has never let me down. I've got almost 200k on it and it starts everytiem and drives worry free. It's one of the most enjoyable cars to drive Ive ever owned and the reason Im 80% into a 2J swap in a 1990 I picked up last year. Great cars.

I'm hating my MK3 right now. It really let me down on a long trip the other day. The tension pulley for the A/C belt came loose and caused it and the belt to fly off while I was driving over a mountain pass. The temperature sensor started to malfunction and caused me to panic. And it developed an intermittent misfire on 2 cylinders that stressed me out even more.

When it runs right, and I can actually drive it without worrying, I love it.

I'll never see the money again, but what I'm building should turn out to be something nice, at least in my eyes. For what it's worth, my opinion is really the only one I care about when it comes to my car anyway, so... I think it will be worth it.

Also, my car, while initially we got off on the wrong foot, has been good to me for the last couple years. :)

Meh, try driving one for almost 25 years. It got old after about 15. It was the most reliable car I've ever had though.
Holy cow man, original owner huh? Or at least very gently used? Makes me wonder... when I'm approaching the big 5-0, will I still have any interest in these cars?

As a 45-year-old who fell in love with the MKIII as a senior in high school in '86 and just bought his 2nd '89 Supra last week, let me say YES, you will!

When I bought my MK3 a month ago I have never been in a car that turned so many heads and have people ask me what year it is and then say nice car when I am stopped at a light. I have a head gasket failure but now I replaced it with a new one and got ARP studs torqued to 90ft lbs and it should not blow out on me again. I just can't wait until I drive it again I miss it so much that sometimes I just sit in the driver seat. I had an 88 targa auto NA mk3 before and that died on me probably from a BHG but that was a very sad night seeing my MK3 getting towed away from me on the highway to never see it again. Then a month ago a friend of mine told me his friend was selling his pearl white, targa, turbo, 5 speed, MK3 for $4,000 and he sold it to me for $3,000. That was the happiest 2 hour drive of my life to say the least, it was hot as hell here in Houston, still is, but driving down the highway out in the country with the targa off with the occasional stock blow off flutter was just heaven.

Don't listen to people who have never owned an MK3 is my advice. It's like what Top Gear UK says about Alpha Romeos, they may break down and people hate them but when you drive and own them they are just wonderful cars. Also when I just look at my MK3 I get a thrill and it transports me back to the 90s imaging seeing one of those beauties on the road fresh off of the dealer lot and breaking necks. As I said earlier it still breaks necks 20 years later.

Sorry I went off on a love story but your post OP just put me in a poetic mode lol.

Good post...
People ask me if I am selling my 92 Turbo Supra a lot when I bring it out... A guy even went up to my car at a gas station and said "best car ever made"...
I also get a lot of thumbs up from cool people that seem to know their cars...
Then of course there are 'ricers' and the people who try to race me, but I just look at them and laugh as my 20+ year old car is still in better condition, a recently example was this ~2004 Mustang GT revving his engine in traffic... like there was somewhere to go...

This forum here made me realize how lucky I am to be in possession of one of these...
And they are only dropping down in numbers and becoming more rare...

Not to mention countless people telling us to put a JZ motor in it, which isn't a bad thing because those are great motors and a JZ motor in an MK3 I think is a great marriage but it gets pretty annoying when people keep saying to drop one in. I love how heavy the doors are they feel solid, it's comfortable and quiet inside as well, it's not totally impractical, looks beautiful anywhere and the targa top gives you the great styling of the hard top with none of the drawbacks of a convertible and it's an occasion when you have to remove the roof. Sure it's sort of a pain but that is why it is special you don't just want to take it off for the hell of it, you walk out on a beautiful day, take the targa off, and it transforms the car and makes the day even better.

About two years, I was probably one of the biggest import haters alive. If it wasn't american muscle it wasn't in my yard or in my conversation. I've been drag racing now for 14 years and have built some pretty amazing cars along with my brother and father, but I when I got my first supra back in 2010 my prespective on cars completely changed. Getting that car from a rolling shell to where I have now has been hell, but it has been worth every moment. It's weird but when I started my supra project, it gave me a new sense of appreciation and its not quite like any car I have built before. It wasn't like one of our race cars, it was a completely different fell and honestly one of the most intoxicating experiences I have had with a car. Someone asked me the other day would I ever sell my supra and my answer is absolutely not. Me and that car are now connected. A part of me is my MkIII supra.
