So, I haven't made an intro post yet, and yes I've searched so I'm sorry my first post is a question.

I have a few symptoms of different problems.

Every once in a while when I start the car smoke puffs out of the exhaust, but not everytime. Also, I have no blue smoke when just under boost hard, but if I'm say parked in neutral and rev the motor everytime I rev it a puff of blue smoke comes out. I'm really hoping it's not the rings, also hoping it's not the turbo as I just purchased the car and the turbo was supposedly sent out to driftmotion and has about 6k on it. I'll do a compression test on it tomorrow, if it comes out ok is there anything I can try to do to remedy this or does anybody have a pinpoint idea on what it is.

I know, I hate asking questions, and having some of them answered but I couldn't find a thread that had my exact symptoms. This is my first turbo supra, but I'm not a stranger to cars, and working on them, so hope you guys can help me out. So far I'm loving the car even with it's little issues. :aigo:

Sounds like valve stem seals or oil from the pcv system which could be rings.

When you do the compression test do it with the engine hot, its a pain in the ass but thats the results you want. Then after doing it with the cylinders dry, Add about have a small spoon half of it of oil into each cylinder and repeat the test. IF the compression goes up its the rings.
You want to crank each time the same amount of times the engine cranks over on each cylinder. About 3-4 times which is also like 3-4sec. Any more than that and your just wasting your time as you shouldnt have to crank for 10sec to build 160psi. Also need to remove efi fuse if you dont already know so the engine doesnt start.

You dont have to post a intro(you can tho so we know who you are and if you want to post pictures or make a buildthread or something). You posted in the right section and with a reasonable amount of info. I dont see anything wrong with your post unless your used to the bashing on sf.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I have decided after lurking that supra mania will be my home, not really a fan of SF. The exhaust is 3" from the dp back to an n1 muffler. I haven't noticed any actual oil consumption. I'll let you guys know how the compression check came out later on this morning. I'll also start a thread in the intro section later. Thanks again!

if its doing it in the mornings or after it sits for a while sounds alot like stem seals. replacing them isnt hard, just very time consuming with the head on.

though hopefully its not rings. we will see when the comp test come back

and welcome to SM! were alot more friendlyier than SF,

+1 for stem seals.

I had the exact symptoms and after replacing the seals during a BHG job I've yet to see ANY smoke.

Well supposedly this head was port/polished, I don't really care if it was or wasn't, but if it was you would think it got new valve stem seals... after 6k they shouldn't be bad. Either way, I did a compression test and I think the results came out great.

1 - 165-170psi
2 - 170
3 - 170
4 - 170
5 - 165-170
6 - 170

On cylinders 1 and 5 4 turns got it 165 and 6 turns got 170.

Looks like it's time to start checking in front of and behind the turbo, and if there is nothing there I guess its the valve stem seals?

what was done at drift motion with the turbo and how many miles on the motor? was it a complete build or just the head that only has 6k or so? also sounds like valve seals also i would check the intercooler if there is any oil that has been sitting there, i remember when i put a after market intercooler about half a quart came out from the intercooler because of a bad turbo seal, since i rebuilt it, its been great since then
