I have 234,XXX original miles on my 7mGE. Decided to seafoam the combustion chamber to clean it out and hopefully correct my rough idle.... (even after I changed plugs and wires. (NGKs gapped to .30 and toyota wires)

Great success!

Car idles better now and drive a little smoother now.

My opinion with using seafoam is if you rave about it before you use it and expect it to work then you see results.

I personally haven't seen anything numbers or hard evidence showing me that has been any improvement. I'm just skeptical in general though, that's me.

At least it worked for you, apparently.

OT: PCguy if that's your supra in your sig, god damn it's hot. Very, very clean...and stock, just how I like supras (esp pre-89 ;))

Of course you could just buy the gallon of Laquer Thinner at Home depot and have the same thing ;) As jetjock mentioned in the other thread....Most of this stuff won't do squat for the short period of time.

Think about it.

Carbon deposits

Carbon

basically the RAW element itself with some impurities

Name: Carbon
Symbol: C
Atomic Number: 6
Atomic Mass: 12.0107 amu
Melting Point: 3500.0 °C (3773.15 K, 6332.0 °F)
Boiling Point: 4827.0 °C (5100.15 K, 8720.6 °F)
Number of Protons/Electrons: 6
Number of Neutrons: 6
Classification: Non-metal
Crystal Structure: Hexagonal
Density @ 293 K: 2.62 g/cm3
Color: May be black

See that Melting point? You can boil the Cast IRON block off and you will STILL have carbon sitting there. ;)

Only a couple of way of getting that stuff out of there.....

LONG TERM water injection OR WIRE WHEEL DIRECTLY on top of the piston top!

OP

with 234k Miles on the car. Those piston tops look like the Grand Canyon except black. You compression is probably extremly high by this time.

i've read a lot about it being snake oil, I also read a lot about how other people noticed improvements on other forums, so I decided to draw my own conclusions.

last year I did the treatment on my dad's 90 toyota pickup (22-RE). My father is the original owner, it's been maintained very well and has 120,000km on it, no rust, looks like new! unfortunately it's spent most of it's life doing short trips, barely getting up to operating temperature. as a result, oil changes are very frequent, every 2-3 months, often with only 2000km on the oil fill. It burns no oil, but the fact that it's babied when driven and never gets very hot has led to some deposits in the intake.

The truck, despite frequent tuneups, had a slightly rough idle and was seriously down on power. it still worked great, but dad commented that "it didn't feel like this when I bought it".

The seafoam treatment did wonders for the truck. The cat continued to function and the 02 sensor did not foul. idle smoothed out and the engine was quieter when it was being driven. there was a large increase in low rpm torque, and a massive change in higher rpm power too. The transmission shifted less and power delivery was smoother. When rpm did increase, the engine sounded much smoother and quieter.

I swear, it worked. An independent tester (my mother) commented on the improvements, without telling her what we did, or to what component of the vehicle. it's certainly not a placebo.

perhaps water would do the same thing, I'm going to try that this summer, but I can't say anything but positive things about seafoam from my own personal experience. good to hear it helped you too!

Spraying oven cleaner on carbon deposits makes them wipe off easily with a rag. I did this with some intake parts.

There are clearly chemical means to can remove carbon deposits. The question is just whether theres a safe an effective way to do it without actually taking the engine apart.

It seems plausible to me that seafoam does SOMETHING, but it's not the cure-all it's purported to be.

There is^^^ " Induction service" cost an arm and a leg at the dealer. But i wouldn't do it though. Last week there was an old truck, 1992 Tacoma came with 122XXX on the clock and one of the service writer recommended the service. Too much carbon build up and all that stuff clogged the cat and that cat was RED, burning, and the car keep dying and wouldn't start up. After that i didn't want to do induction service because i'm afraid that with all the carbon build up in my car, it may kill my cat.
