I have one (youngest) son wanting a Supra and the other, wanting to buy back my Supra. :aigo:

I found a 89 N/A in Craig's List for $1,400 and it has a slight miss and pumping out white smoke. Sounds like a ::bhg:: to me!

I talked the guy today about it and I'm going to see it Thursday night. Particulars are: 125K miles, 5speed, Leather Seats (showning wear), tems, boombox stereo, after market moonroof (non electric type that only pops up in the back).

I'm thinking maybe $1,200 and then have both my sons work with me on it to fix the blown head gasket (so they can learn to work on these cars) and go from there.

What do most of you think a 89 N/A 5speed with a BHG would be worth?

Thanks,

If the body and interior are in good shape Id offer 1,600. Thats what I paid for my BHG NA anyways.

Seeing as the edit buttons being retarded...

I thought your post was saying $1900 for some reason. Sounds like your getting a good deal as long as its in good shape.

lowball him. the worst thing that can happen is for him to say no.
you can always go up on the price if need be. however, you cannot go down once you make an offer.

i would pay 800-1200 if it's in very good shape.
if it has any dents or rust spots, no more than $500

Thanks for the tips...If I think the car is worth fixing, I think what I'll do is first find out what other offers he has gotten. If none, I'll offer $800 and see where it goes from there. :naughty:

I'll keep you informed.

$800-$1200. I've gotten offers to buy BHG N/As for $1,500 and talked them down to $1K. Just tell them the car bluebooks for $3K in MINT condition, and a shop told you it would be $2K to rebuild the head and put in new rod bearings because of contamination. That'll get them down to your level. :evildeal:

They really do vary I got mine for 400 bucks 89 sport package NA with BHG and a spun bearing. For an N/A i would stay under1500 for a really nice turbo the shell can go up to 2500.

I paid $900 for an na with bhg this summer. It ended up needing a lot more work than just a new engine. I wish I had paid less.

This is one of my concerns also. Once you get into the engine, you just never know what you're going to find. :aigo:

I had a discussion with my sons last night, so the plan is IF I buy this Supra, The younger son will be footing the bill for it, while the older will buy mine back from me (he owned it before I did) and BOTH of them will be doing work on the new Supra to learn how to work on the cars. In the meantime, I'm going to take the money that my son pays me for mine and put it into an account at the bank where it will add up as he pays me and after he pays it all off, I'll add a little to it and then I'm going to start looking for a good 91 or 92 5-speed. :yumyum:

I doubt if I will be looking for a turbo, because I really don't want the expense of working on the turbo sooner or later. :runaway: $$$$

Again, Thanks for all of your comments, if the car is in good shape, it sounds like $1000 would be about right.

You would be surprised how little the maintenance will cost from a Turbo car to an NA car. Just find a well maintained one, which isn't hard to do in California

Thanks, I'll have to think about that because I've never been a big fan of turbos due to the heat they generate. I've always thought the best way to go was a supercharger. But something to think about and look into.

Turbo's.....reliability....heat....maintaince.....debatable and I don't want to highjack anyones topic :) Make sure your sons take lot's of pics, have A LOT of zip lock bags handy and just have a good time. I just put my 86.5 N/A back together(took it apart at the end of February). Paid 500, it's a Cali car and although it could be in worse shape it's not in the greatest either. My point being, these cars are coming up on their 20 year life cycle. To have a functional one is great, to have a functional one you restored/fixed up, that's the only way to go if you ask me. Good luck with all the work ahead for the boys, keep us updated!

Yeah, beleive me, we will be using lots of ziplock bags. I did that when I did a headgasket on my first (87) Supra. Worked out great! :icon_bigg

Sometimes its just dumb luck getting a good car for a reasonable price. I paid a grand for mine and it needed some work. With a $500 parts car added in its now a very good car. I’m sure I will have to deal with some larger issues in the future since the car does have 180,000 miles on it.
