buy a motor or motor & tranny set they a hacked harness, they usually go for 1K which would be cheaper then a rebuild. Then sell what you don't need and it should work out fine. Sell the head pipes etc.

dude, i would buy a brand new 2jz-gte shortblock from toyota before blowing 3k on a 1j rebuild. IIRC my friend (albeit with a employee discount) picked one up for 1800ish.

Are you sure it is a rod knock, have you checked it? I had the same problem, a few mechanics taught it was a rod knock too and when i got it checked it turned out to be the timing bely tensioner.
