I hate valve shims

Well I pulled the vavle covers today to retorque my arps and thought to my self while i'm doing this i'll check my valve shim clearances, now i know that my cars valves have always seemed to be a little loud but i sure as hell no why now. Take a look at the cleaces i measured and see if they look a little odd to any one else

yeah, even with the proper tool for it, it's still hard. i was dickin' around for 10 minutes and got one damn shim out. i said fuck it, and took the cams out. wanna buy my tool?:biglaugh:

yeah them valve shims are gay. and pricey. but what's new.

i just used a screw driver and pushed the lifter down on the outside and then used a smalll screw driver to pop the shim out using that little slot on lifter.. then a pen magnet.. wasnt that hard at all.

It strikes me as odd that the #1 valve on the intake side is so freakin tight and that the #1 exhaust valve on cylinder 3 is so freakin loose

Screw driver and magnete worked great for me too. Go to your local Pick a Part and find all of the old twin cam Corrollas. I picked up about 50 shims for $5.00!

With the SST, it is quite easy. The magnet helps as noted.

Ya, I use the tool to compress the bucket in my right hand, the jeweler's screwdriver to pop the shim out in my left hand, and the magnet in my other hand. No problem!

Maybe that's why it was such a pain in the ass!

You don't even need the cam pliers. A small nail pulling like prybar works. Put it on the edge, roll the bar so the spring depresses, and put in the toll that holds it down. Then slip in the magnet.

Look at the other shims. You can do more than one at a time. You have to be off the lobe.
