Hey guys.

I had a very SLIGHT accident ( seriously just a dent and spider cracks on the bumpers paint and right beside my rear left tailight ).

I want to know how much you guys paid for a full factory paint job ( external, no jams or engine bay)....

I have the 1987 Silver Amythyst metallic color...

I know the dent will not be much to take out...but it needs to be repainted and matching 18 year old metallic silver paint is just not going to happen..

How much were your paint jobs?

Really I am just trying to reach out to other members to see HOW MUCH they paid!

I dont need the door jams.

I need certain parts of the car sanded down ( I guess the whole car). Then a nice stock re paint ( DuPont or PPG only ) and probably a really high quality clear coat ( 2 coats if my budget permits)...

Mostly its my front bumper too! The clear coat is just GONE...its dull paint..cant really see it that bad in pics or in person.

I am thinking probaly around $1000 for the paint job I am thinking of.

I do have friends however that know people....

but the paint job is only as much as you can pay for!

my paintjob is a maaco job... it was one of their higher end jobs b\c I got a dealer discount... and I did all the taping myself... I think that helped a little bit... I also completely sanded down the car and primered it and then sanded the primer with a very light wet sand... then I had maaco paint it and it looks good... I mean could do a good buff on it and it would look better but it looks awesome... it cost me all together for the sandpaper, tools to sand (electric sander), primer and maaco job it was around $500 and the paint looks amazing... you'd be suprised what some small prep work can do... even if you don't sand the whole car down to the metal at least scuff it up and primer it so the new paint will stick better... or you can go the expensive/garauntee route.... which is have a profesional painter do all the work...

I was thinking of taping and sanding ( prep work ) myself to save money and time.

I know how to do that stuff. I might even consider taking off the body panals ( front ) to save money and get a better fit/finish

of course this is probably months from now...but its good to do research ahead of time!

thanks guys!

my bro just got his car done for 650 stock paint (ice blue pearl) and it looks fantastic. also comes with a 6 year warranty. ill see if he can post pics. he did alot of the removal of things (moulding, wing etc) and they did the rest. they had to rebuild his mirrors all the way up as it was down to the yellow plastic, i cant tell which one it is now.

Here's an interesting fact..... Guys that paint for Maaco do so many cars that they have very smooth hands and can really lay a good coat.
What hurts Maaco is that they don't prep for crap. So, if you want to save money, do all the prep work yourself. Remove the door handles, moldings, tails, and even the windows in the rear 1/4 panels and take off the weather strippings off the targa too and sand down and primer and do all the prepping yourself. It's work, but saves you the money. When all the prepping is done and you have everything covered (don't forget to cover the IC and stuff behind the bumper), take the car to them and have them paint it.
If you're on a major budget, this would be the way to do it. Otherwise, don't bother.

I don't recommend Maaco if your supra depended on it though. I believe in doing it right the first time.
If you can afford it though, take it to a real shop and get a great paint job.
The shop that we send our jobs to won't allow you to prep the car because they don't trust anyone else to do it right. Their prep work is awesome. They prep and paint every part off the car (bumpers removed, targa off, mudflaps off, rear 1/4 panel windows off....). Then they do the body seperate. They even paint the black part of the mudflap. Saw them do a couple of our customer cars and it's just amazing.
