I feel like an idiot for asking this...

But I want to make sure...

I'm in the process of picking up all my fluids needed for the annual changes before my baby gets back on the road and so far I've gathered the following:

Castrol Syntec 10W-40 for the Motor
Redline MT-90 for my tranny
Texaco coolant

Now the two things I'm left at are Differential and random fluid top up's.

For the Diff I'm planning on Redline once again, but which viscosity would be what I'm looking for? 75W-90 GL5? I've also got the stock Torsen LSD, would a friction modifier need to be added? If so, how much?

Now the idiot part.....

For my power steering & clutch fan, it says use Dexron II ATF, problem is, I cannot find Dexron II anymore. What are you guys using or what can I substitute this with???

Yea I know, I feel like an idiot, but it's the first JZA70 I've owned and I want to get it right the first time.

read the fine print on the bottles....several will say they are compatible with systems designed for dexron ii

Phew, I was expecting a mallot on the head for that one :aigo:. Thanks for your help.

Now onto the matter of the differential...

75w90 or 80w90. the bottle should also say weather or not it has the additive. i think redline does and same with mobil1. what i have heard that works good is ford oil and additive.

DEX-VI (the latest) is backwards compatible with previous formulations. For the Texaco coolant of the three chemistries available you should use either the HOAT or the inorganic. My choice would be the HOAT...

I'll have to go pick up some DEX-VI then, much thanks.

HOAT meaning the Hybrid coolant correct? If I'm changing fluids on an annual basis, would it make a big difference? I've only heard that it's better if you don't change fluids too often (the HOAT being good for what, 5 years I'm told?)

Yes, the HOAT is long-life. It'd be a waste to change it annually. Just to clear up any confusion the "custom made" stuff is the HOAT, the inorganic comes in the black jug, and mallot is a little town in Pakistan ;)

Any difference between what advanced auto parts/auto zone sells as 'Import Transmission Fluid' and the 'Dexron VI' stuff?

Second to last bottle I bought was VI, last bottle was the Import stuff, dunno why I switched...both said they worked for at least Dexron II though. One significantly better than the other or NFI?

Lmao! I think what I've got is the inorganic then, my dad uses it at his shop and got me a few gallons of it so I've always used it. It's not pre-mixed, comes in a black jug with a red cap and a black label.

Just for sake of being simple, I'm not going too too crazy with the PS fluid and Clutch Fan fluid, just something I can use to top it up when need be from time to time. So I gather that any DEX-VI ATF would be good to use to top up those two?

Might want to read the oil section...

I used to be able to find Castrol Edge up here which was amazing oil, but for some reason, I can't find ANY of it anymore. For the last oil change I did I used Syntec 10W-40 and it seemed to take to it just fine.

I've read about the German Castrol in the oil section, but is there something about the normal Castrol Syntec that you can buy in Canadian Tire / NAPA that I should know about??

^its not the brand(kinda is) but more of the weight. its too thick for cold start ups. 10w vs a 0w. the lower the first number(which stands for the viscosity of cold temps)the faster the oil will flow when cold.

using thicker oil puts more wear on a healthy engine which in turn you will be forced to run a thicker weight or you'll get knock.

edit: poodles beat me.

I should probably mention that I don't winter drive my JZA70. It's strictly for summer. With that being said, 10W-40 = still too thick? What would you recommend?

I've got to look into it today, but word on the street is that the Castrol Syntec that they carry at the Canadian Tire's up here is GC. I'm going to go in today and take a look, if it says made in germany on the back, I'm picking up 5 Litres of some 0W-30 liquid gold =]

according to the GM dex vi bottles, it's not automatically backwards compatible with dex iii... gm often recommend it for systems which ones used dex iii, but it does also state on the bottle something about not being an automatic replacement for dex iii in power steering systems...

btw... as for coolant... toyota red all the way :)

German Castrol is a different type of oil compared to other Castrol synthetics. Its very good oil.

Its something to do with the base stock used. J-dub is FAR more knowledgeable then i am on this subject, but thats the basic of it.

Though you need to experiment on oil weight, every motor is different. Im going to run 5-40 redline as thats what my motor will require. GC is too thin for me, im using it now. 10 psi per 1krpm rule of thumb, whatever weight gets you that is what you want to use.

My problem is idle pressure, my bearings clearances are on the big side, not so much intentionally, but from what my research has told me its better off anyway.

Correct, it is labeled in North America as Castrol Syntec 0W30 european formula, and it will say made in germany on the back. The oil itself will be either green (older) or [strike]red[/strike] gold (newer) color. They are both good and it is ok to mix the two.
