New owner this week of a MKIII. Got a feeling I'm one of the more older owners on here, but what the hell.

Just picked up a 88 MKIII from my father-in-law (ex actually) and rather excited about it. Needs some work, in decent shape both inside and out. All stock and hope to keep it that way. Use it as a DD, but want to start fixing it up back to stock specs if possible.

Probably be lurking on the boards for awhile, but will see what happens.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Welcome to sm any pics of car or specs

I'll try to post up some pics later. Havn't had much time to go through all the specs. What kind of specs you guys look for or find interesting?
I got the car on a kind of rento-to-own type deal. My trucks tranny went out and was desperate for something to get me to work and he offered it to me. Now that I've driven it for a couple of days, I'm glad I took it. :)
Its only got 122k miles on it and my bro-in-law is a mechanic that put about $1500.00 of work into the engine last year, so I feel somewhat confident that its in decent working condition.

This coming from a 46 year old fart. :)

Looks mint wish I could get a rent to own like that a.y plans on goin turbo

Far from mint. No body damage, just a lot of dings across the front. Interior is well used.

No plans on turbo. Want to keep everything stock for right now, except the sound system. Don't want to go nuts, but have to get something better.

Nice car. I would do a couple things right off the bat though. Check your brake lights when its wet for condensation inside. If you see some.. replace the brake light seals (not difficult to do). Look closely at your hatch seal as well.
Then.. stick your hands inside the rear quarter panels and feel for water/dirt. Of all the car issues, the water getting in from the brake lights will run into your spare tire well and rust it out and dirt+water in the quarters will destroy the metal in short order.
From how clean it looks in the photo, I just suggest that to ensure it stays that way.. : )

Preventing is sooo much easier than fixing..

this from an older than anyone who has posted so far - fart.

Thanks for the tips.

I do have one somewhat major leak right now. Water is coming in where the targa meets the windshield on the drivers side corner. I've only had a chance to look at it briefly and found that its right at the corner. Not sure exactly how its coming in, but with the rainy season upon us, it's going to be one of my top priorities. (Although with this being western washington, it is always the rainy season)

Ahh, your car pees on you as well I see. I have the same problem, but suspect it has more to do with my car getting t-boned a LONG time ago and my failing to notice before I bought it, grumble grumble... As for a fix, if you replace your seals and re-seal the rails on the sides of the top itself, it *should* stop doing that.

The targa seal leak is very common at the front and rear joints on the sides (where the targa rubber meets the car rubber). You can actually do a little build up with silicone in some cases just to make up for the minor shrinkage.
Failing that of course.. the seals are available and there is a write up I could find for you if you ever want to actually redo the seals yourself. It isn't terribly difficult, but it is a little time intensive to do it correctly.
