Hobbies are for fun. When you start trying to be an accountant with your hobby, it stops being fun.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I do this for all my hobbies, computers, paintball, and car. Never add up the cost. Other than that like all the guy/girls on here Im the same, I know what Ive bought, and what Ive done.

I keep a mental note of what I've done and what needs to be done and that's all. If I put the Supra in terms of money, I'd vomit.

If you actually enjoy keeping an in depth catalogue of everything you do to an old car like that then more power to ya.

To me, records like that only matter if I'm buying a one owner car that is still immaculate. But I'll know if a car's been taken care of by looking at it and within the first minute of driving it.

Maybe not the typical approach but it works for me:

The car has always been well maintained and has good records. In fact the same sort of records as used for aircraft. That said these days I put as little money into it as possible. Just enough to keep it reliable. After all it's 20 years old and through good maintenance still has almost every original part.

There comes a time when a car cared for in this manner isn't worth trying to make last beyond a certain point because the downside of that type of care is at some point things will start to fail in relatively quick succession. In other words the car has served me very well for the 20 years I've owned it and since I know at 142K miles that time isn't far off I've got far better things to spend my money on.

Well what would you buy after this car? Lotus?

Already have one of those. Sort of. An older Esprit with a different body on it. Fun but not a good DD.

I dunno what it'll be but since it's likely to be the last car I own I'll have to think hard about it. Maybe a Lexus. Whatever it is it'll be used because buying a car new (even with cash as I did the Supra) has to be one of the dumbest financial decisions a person can make. Call it a weak moment when I was young and foolish. At least keeping it so long offset that blunder.

The Soup will probably get crushed when it starts giving grief. For the faithful service it's delivered it deserves to die by it's original owner's hand. My 16 year old step daughter would like to have it but that's not going to happen for obvious reasons. Not to mention children in my charge aren't allowed to even be licensed until they're 18 and I doubt the car will be around that long.

JJ, if your car really is as well-maintained and in great shape like you say it is...then it still has a LOT of life left...My car has well over 200k miles, and it is still reliable...I've only had to replace small things, mainly engine components, parts of the TCCS, etc...(mostly just normal wear/maintenance items) but I've found, that after owning a 1-owner 77' Porsche in immaculate condition that the Supra was engineered far better than the porsche, and if subjected to the same abuse that my Supra has been subjected to by it's previous owners, it wouldn't last nearly as long...

So yea, the Supra is a great car that should last a long long time...and I'm not sure if i'll ever buy another older German car. :\
