Just wondering how to tell if struts or coilovers are blown while off the car?

depending on the shock design, you won't be able to compress them or they rebound back out after being compressed (I know bilsteins DON'T like to compress, and will extend themselves if left compressed)

well, the only blown bilstein I've seen was damaged (just jumped his truck off a 6' drop) and didn't rebound at all and had little to no resistance to movement...

I was always under the impression the struts dont rebound once compressed, they are not shocks which do rebound.

They have no leaks but how should the dampening be tested? There is resistance when pushing the shaft in and pulling it back out.

rent a spring compressor and take the springs off. Once you're down to the strut only, check to see if you can push the piston in. If you can do it with both hands without pushing it against anything, then I'd say they're blown. I just pushed my struts against the ground and felt that there was even resistance the whole length of the piston. If the struts have adjustable dampening, make sure that this affects how much speed/force it takes to compress the strut.

dampening is resistance to movement, rebound is them extending themselves after being compressed

spring does the rebound usually (depends on dampener design), so you're looking for the resistance to movement (the shocks stop the oscillations of the springs after hitting a bump)
