So i broke my valve cover bolts a while ago, and i drilled them out recently. Now i'm stuck with bunch of bolt debris and shreds under the camshaft and around the spark plug area. Now do i have to remove the camshaft and try to clean it out with a cloth cause i try to suck em out with a vacuum but that didn't work. Plus how do you remove the spark plug cover? Any other ideas?

the spark plug cover have those 3 or 4 center "plug" type things, they take a big ass allen, 14mm IIRC...

and try a magnet to get the shavings out, or tape on the magnet too.

i think its a 12mm alen... next time you have something to do like this... its real simple to keep clean...drape a old sheet over the area... find all the bolt holes by feeling.... cut out a hole about 1 inch round.....or so and then put hole over hole/bolt and tape.. then razer knife around the bolt hole....

follow me... and it sounds like you need to completely remove cams and get a shop vack with a small tip and hope you get them all out... and i would after dump a few gallons of oil down there while the covers are off and let the oil run threw to bottom with drain out and hope it all comes out...check as it comes out... stick finger in stream then look in sun... you see metal you still gota flush more....

You caused yourself alot of headack....... never do that again with out covering up inside of motor.... You really need to pull head and have cleaned...

^^^ good Idea but aluminum isn't magnetic. Pics of said shavings. Cam needs to come out. If it was me an air gun and lots of time, followed with a lightly greesed cloth to help pick up small particulates. you will need to flush your motor with cheep oil after your done just to be safe (do not run just flush from open cam cover open drain bolt). You don't want shavings in your motor they will kill it fast.

but most bolts are steel. :biglaugh:

if he drilled his head then he has bigger problems... from what he said it sounded like it drilled the bolt and nothing else. which is why i suggested the magnet. and i wouldnt just pour oil all over it, that will just carry it all over the motor and just wreak havoc. use tape, cloth, sock, lint free towel. and i wouldnt use an air gun either, take the risk of just blowing the shavings all over the place, and more than likely not out of the engine.

but which bolt was it? you didnt post any pics, so were all guessing on what needs to be done.

HAH, I thought the same thing, AL head/magnet = nope, but you are right! the bolts are steel and a magnet would pick up most of the shavings pretty good. If you have an old computer hard drive around, take it apart and pull the magnets out of it as they are EXTREMELY powerful.

I wouldnt flush the filings down the motor unless it was my LAST resort. However if you can actually get them down to the pan then a magnetic drain plug would be a good idea. The remaining particles should be caught by the filter.

Best idea though is to try to remove as much as you can out the top. Pulling the cams would allow better access and you can wash the cams and races out with clean towels and solvent.
