Ok. I've had a computer virus for quite sometime. It's not a bad one. It just gives me pop ups on occasion and random sounds and whatnot. And now the sound on my computer has a reverb type sound to it. I put in the reboot CD and try to reboot the computer and it comes up with a bunch of x's forming the words "WRONG MACHINE" And it is definitely the right reboot CD. So, any ideas on how to reboot my computer without it saying that?

Try spybot and adaware from download.com I dont recommend a reformat. I do recommend you adjust your XP services to the Black Viper Safe settings. I supplied you the links. By making these Windows Services adjustments I was able to remove those stinking anti virus programs like norton and mcafee once and for all and keep thier computers free from attacks.

Yeah, reformat is the most effective at getting rid of a virus, but it should be a last resort.

So, is it not letting you reboot?... or what? Is it stuck off? Im a little confused.

If you have XP go Start>Accessories>System tools>System Restore. And select a date before you got the virus. Itll reset the registry keys and everything. Its good if you dont wanna reformat your HD back to square one.

my personal favorite- if ya have restore enabled.
bro, the guys are right, you lose it all. reformatting the harddrive is Extremely drastic.

It'll probably take more than a day to get it all loaded, and back where ya had it.

i remember one time a virus (or somethin) resided in my video card, and sound card. i liked ta never figured out why it kept coming back.

SO beware of the 64bit viruses that can only be removed with a 64bit or better machine. very nasty f*ckers.

I tried that earlier. It only went back to Jan. and I've had the virus since then. And I forgot to mention earlier. It's on a laptop and it doesn't have a floppy drive. All it came with for rebooting purposes was a reboot CD. Looks like I'll be reformatting. So what exactly does reformatting a computer take away? Everything that I've put onto the computer myself? If so, thats not really a problem. I have unneccessary shit on here I don't really need except for one program.

What it does is clears (or deletes i guess) the 'tracks' on the hard disk and then it 'remakes' them as it would of been when new, but not as good. Reformating a harddrive many times can be unhealthy. It also installs nessacery bootup processes. Your gonna need to reinstall your OS though.

Well many people have different ways about going through this and so here is what I have done:

I am now hooked up with AOL SE (Security Edition).
It comes with McAfee virus program and a firewall as well.
I get broadband with AOL (and all the features they offer) and the security features for only $25.90 a month!
My computer has never run better and I get it all for like the lowest price I could have imagined.
I know I sound like a commercial, but I am so thrilled with their package.
You need a virus program, no?
You need a firewall too, no?
And today you need nothing less than a broadband connection.
I was going to go out and pay for the security software in addition to paying 45 a month for RoadRunner, but now I am hooked up paying less for the connection and getting so much more.

If my computer had the problem you have, I would try to see what is up with it by doing a check with a virus program. Even if you remove the virus, sometimes the damage could have already taken place.
I also use AdAware and SpyBot too.

If you can fix it easily, do so.
If not, you need to do a fresh install after the format.
But once you do that, you need to be safe and have a virus program as well as a firewall too.

Well, I am happy with my new setup and I hope it is as good as I think it is.
That is what I have done.

The one thing I want to learn though is to make a restore image from Ghost or an equivalent program. Then I could restore things exactly to how they were at a point and do it within like 45 minutes or so.

If nothing else, at least you get to see where I have gone with such problems and what my resolutions have been.

By the way, dcrusupra87, my computer is a Toshiba Satellite labtop, and I think that is what you have too...so you have a similar restore disk that I would have.

It sounds like you have LOP on your system LOP is a very nasty little program that neither adware or spybot will remove. LOP is not concidered a virus its adware. they find the infection and say they removed it but they dont. What worked for me is webroots Spysweeper. as for reformating the drive you are going to need a bootCD other than the reinstall cd. if you have an XP CD that should be bootable. you are probably not going to be able to do a format with a regular boot floppy as the bootfloppy wont understand about the file system (NTFS) if its (FAT32) you will be OK. and as to the restore CD I would call the Company and get it replaced. Question is it saying the (WRONG MACHINE) when you try and run the restore program or during the boot process?

With a bootable XP CD you can run through the setup and select quick format NTFS. It only takes 10 seconds to give you a clean slate for Windows, just backup your files and documents first and have the driver CD onhand for afterwards. Or, better yet, find a local supra techie and buy them beer and pizza :)

Unless you are running a real highend system your probably not goig to be able to percieve a differance between FAT32 and NTFS. the really big differance beyween the 2 is the security. NTFS is a bit more secure than fat32. (there are security options not available in FAT32 that are in NTFS)
