just a brief overview:

'88 supra turbo targa
cometic hg
arp head studs
new gaskets all around, new timing belt, new water pump
cleaned intake + enhaust components
apexi s-afc 2
every gauge you can think of

for now.

my question:
how do you correctly time the engine, i tried doing the haynes manual way...and it sucks
my timing light should be in within the week
p.s. ebay sucks! (thats where i bought the timing light)

like a step by step process writen out woudl be awesome
and very much appreciated
ive searched the forums and did not come up with much

Lastly, i got the engine to turn over but it wont even idle
and it blows out a grey sort of weird smoke when i ATTEMPT
to start it
and obviously its not ready

Yes but he can't even get his car to idle?

You can't set timing if the car isn't idling at the proper speed, much less not running at all...

You need to go back to step one and check your mechanical timing.

Ensure piston 1 is at TDC, the harmonic balancer is pointing at 0*, each cam gear has the dowels installed correctly and are pointing up at the 2 notches in the rear cam gear cover, and the belt tensioner must be installed properly as well.

Then the CPS has to be aligned correctly

Only after you set mechanical timing properly can you try and start the car and set the exact timing with the CPS

Yep, I totally missed the sentance about "it doesn't idle", yep your right, I gotta read the whole thread for now on...

He asked about timing the engine, not about timing the CPS.
Really, if I read through the whole post corrcetly, it appears he wants someone to hold his hand while he does it.

Valve Timing versus Ignition Timing...

Aah yes that would be the correct terminology, i was struggling to think of it and ended up with 'exact' timing :biglaugh:

The message got across though ;)

haha thanks

no ive tried a couple of times and id much rather get insight from people who have done it before, made the mistakes, and have something good to say

AND i actually needed both. I think my cps is off. I'll try to fix that now and then go into the ignition timing with the cps

For correctly "mechanically"timing the cps, doesnt it have to be on the knotch

well i did all that and i thought the manual was just a tad vague

i ran the engine after doing that for about 5 minutes until it sorta warmed up
but the whole time it was rough idling

then i tried to time it with my stroboscope but it was too bright outside

so is that really all you do? just align the dang dots and thats it for the first part?
