How the heck do you fit the center console over the ABS ECU? *PICS*

I can't seem to figure how the center console fits over the ECU for the ABS. I bought a console off of a memeber years ago and now I can't get it to fit. It appears it would install just fine without the ECU there and just its brackets. The bottom of the console is too shallow to fit around the ECU. Are there different center consoles between years or something?

Here are some pics to show what I'm dealing with.

This can't be that difficult. Any ideas where I'm going wrong here?

That's not the ABS ECU, that's the airbag ECU. 89 and older cars did not have an airbag or the associated ECU, and their center console well was therefore deeper. You need a center console from a 90-92.

Doh! I meant SRS ECU. LOL

That sucks tho. I never heard there were different center consoles. That freakin sucks. All that prepping and painting for nothing. Damnit!!!

Oh well; an easy enough fix. I'll have to place an add in the wanted section.

You could cut out the bottom of that, then lay the cut out piece over that air bag unit. You'd only lose the one screw hole in the center of that compartment, and everywhere else would remain the same. It would just leave the possibility for your pennies to fall through the cracks.:biglaugh:

I have a grey 90 console, no lid. It is just as you have pictured, but with the shallow compartment. $30 shipped

Is the only difference between the older style consoles and the newer ones the depth of the compartment, or do the newer ones compensate by being taller? If not, I'll just cut the bottom off the compartment out and silicon it in higher up and carpet over it.

that is the only difference, you could also relocate the srs ecu as i did on my 91. just opening options.

I have so many piggybacks and guages running everywhere that there isn't much free room to spare. Where did you relocate yours?

Looks like cutting it is the way to go. Easy enough.

Thanks :icon_razz

Yeah, that's true. However, I'm not sure what will be easier at this point; prepping and painting or cutting. Cutting seems pretty simple right now. If it doesn't work out I can always grab a another center console and repaint.

Or, buy his for $30 and not have to hack anything ;)

Plus he might have the bracket to screw down the rear of the console, which makes it more stable and less prone to damage from rear passenger bump.

I would but his, $30 is pretty what it will be to ship. He's helping you out. Just get the right one and if you get the chance sells yours back and break about even.

As mentioned, he may have the bracket for thr back as well. It would be easier, wouldn't cost much or much MORE if you sell yours and would look a lot nicer.

Am I missing a bracket to? I thought screws would just thread through the back sides of the console and into the bracket on the back of the ECU. Does anyone have a picture of the missing bracket?

Yeah, I might as well start fresh. I have to paint a couple more panels anyways so I can just do the center console at the same time.

ForcedTorque, you have PM.

Thanks guys.

Yes, there is a bracket that goes over the ECU and you screw the rear console from the inside. I'll take picture when I get home from work.
