How often do you wax your vehicles?

How often does everyone wax? The previous owner of my supra and I both neglected its paint and now its ruined. Ive vowed to treat paint better on all my rides from now on.

With my jeep and bike, I didnt wax them just wash them now and then. Now I wash the jeep every other weekend or so and been waxing once a month. I actually dont mind waxing it anymore doesnt take long and I do it in the garage. Im amazed how much better it looks after a few wax jobs. It washes so much easier too, before dust/dirt/mud would just stick to it now it rinses right off.

For the bike I use some new turtle wax ICE(?) spray on wax stuff. It put a great shine on it by just wiping it down. Seems like it would be a huge pain using liquid/paste wax on the bike with all the gaps and curves. I use that stuff after every wash, I cant imagine it stays after a good wash.

Is there a case of too much wax? Should I be applying wax after each wash or stick to once a month or less now that it has a good coat? I use a detail brush to keep up on the wax build up spots cause it does build up in spots easy.

It's not necessary the amount of times you wax your vehicle it is how you wax it and with what. Also use clean microfiber pads. Always claybar before doing polishing. And always use a good wax. My favorite products are from Adam's and Griot's Garage. An orbital buffer can do wonders for tired paint and can virtually eliminate swirl marks with the aid of the right polish.
Just do yourself a favor and never use cotton terry towels or low loft microfiber on your paint!!
Good luck!

I washed my 82 every time I took it out. Waxed it ATLEAST monthly. I'd buff it when summer started.

I've waxed the STI 3 times since I've had it... so every 4 months. I swear it came w/ swirl marks from the factory.

It came with swirl marks from the dealer...

It's typical when dealers detail the cars and do a bad job doing it.

It depends a LOT on the type of wax you use. Modern polymer waxes don't need to be applied nearly as often as say, carnauba wax. If using carnauba wax, I would do it WEEKLY as the wax is a nice high gloss but doens't protect nearly as well as a polymer.

It also depends a lot on how often it's exposed to the elements.

There really is no harm in applying wax after every wash. As long as it's WAX and not a polishing agent that will wear the paint.

I have been a detailer for some time now. I recomend a basic wax at least every 3 months. I wax my horribly faded flaking paint every month.:biglaugh:

Polish and buffing wear your paint quickly but are the only way to remove oxidation and scratches. You should reserve that for when it needs to be done. And NEVER wash your car in dish soap! I am amazed at how many people do that.:3d_frown:

Really?

I'm surprised, usually OCD isn't compartmentalized. :sarcasm:

I'm going to resist the urge to preach about paint protection systems, those that get it, get it. Those that don't, dont.

I actively ignore it ;)

I know if I start on the body in any way there goes another year and untold amounts of $$$.

MY car gets washed about 1 a month lol but the paint doesn't match , chipping and in horrible shape but my girlfriend and i wash and wax her mustang about 2-3 times a month (some times just quick detailer if i am lazy)and 1 or 2 a year i'll do a full detail which is
1-washing with dish soap to strip the old wax off
2-clay bar
3-rubbing compound (if needed)
4-polish (if need usually does)
5-a good synthetic wax
and thats just the paint lol

For my jeep I use mcguires carnauba wax and new micro fiber pads. I keep the jeep garaged so It doesnt sit in the sun as much. A week after its wash/wax you can run your hand across the hood and its like running your hand over ice(real smooth).

Ive been wanting to try a power buffer but Im worried about causing paint damage lol. Is there any advantage to a power buffer besides being faster? Will it give a better/even coat of wax? Ive read alot of stories where people end up with bad swirls or scratches from not using them correctly. I dont want my learning process to be the end of my paint, maybe I should start power buffing the supra....

If the weather's good, I'll do a wash and wax every weekend (I get bored easily) with a full exterior and interior clean (Vacuuming, upholstery cleaning, and that Liquid Ice interior wax) every other week. But it hasn't happened this summer with all the rain we've been having in WNY, it just hasn't been worth it. I used to do the same with my Bronco.

I've slowly been working on my Targa/Sport roof. It looks like absolute shit. I'll give it another go with the polishing compound and wax every time I do the rest of the car. It's getting a little better.

What do you use on the interior, if you have cloth not leather? My jeeps cloth interior isnt dirty but Id like to give it a good cleaning one of these weekends.

I do have leather seats, but on the rest of the carpeting I use the Turtlewax Oxy carpet cleaner. It's probably not the best (haven't tried anything else) but it works, and does get the smells out. For all of the non-carpet interior stuff (dash, instrument panel, leather, everything) i use the liquid ice. It also makes everything smell nice. Seems to last a while too.

I like to do the whole treatment (wash, clay bar, detail, polish and wax) twice a year. I try to do it before I park the car for the winter and then I do it again in the spring sometime.
