Ok well I only make enough money to have 1000 dollars to play with every month, and if a supra is going to cost more than that to maintain then I don't wanna get one quite yet.

Definitely not to maintain.... Initially it could take $1000 to $2000 to do the mhg surface and arp studs + replacing pumps all gaskets and anything else that may need replacing.

Other than that if you have 1000 to play with each month, your supra is gonna be bad ass!! :evil2:

I come from a land down under
Well to give you an idea back in 1999 I did 33x trips Melbourne to Sydney, 75000 Km's/46600 Miles and just did regular oil/water checks and nothing more.

IF they're maintained correctly and not half assed Mk3's are reliable.

I was joking when I said "once" most of the problems with these cars are owner induced.

Hmm, well people have been saying they're broke after owning a supra, I was wondering if it's because they break down? Or do you just mod a lot at first? One person who comes to mind is that guy with 3 supras in his sig, I can't remember his name... I wonder how he fairs lol

Ok good because this car is going to be my daily and I can't have it breaking down all the time, I don't mind doing oil and stuff like that but replacing things, nein.

I can't tell you why other people are broke, But I can tell you why I am.

I bought my supra for 1000, it didnt run right and the motor ended up being trash. The 1000 was all I had in my account.

5 months later to this day I borrowed 3 grand from family members and ordered a 7m-gte off ebay for a grand. The other 2 grand involved resurface, cometic mhg, arp studs, Stage 3 F1 clutch light fly, Full brand new tanabe medallion touring exhaust, apexi intake, and I plan to spend around 500 more to repair the bottom end since I spun a bearing racing with low oil pressure(A owner induced problem easily avoided). Would have been around 200 to fix oil pressure problem probably for good.

It all boils down to the condition of the car when you buy it and how well of a mechanic you are. Being my first car I've rebuilt I fucked up so much I basically have to do my rebuild over again. Though it won't cost nearly as much because now I know more of what I'm doing and the right way to do things by learning from mistake.

Edit,
$400 of the cost went to tools/cherrypicker becuase I had jack shit for tools.

For the most part if you maintiain it like you would any other car then its very reliable. When you start modding it is when it gets expensive. hehe.

That's razoe btw. he has 3 supras in his signature.

The problem is sometimes when you buy them they have been abused, shit on, and neglected. Sometimes it takes a ton of money, sometimes you get lucky. But once you get everything back in shape, there usually very reliable as long as you take care of them.

Ninja edit: Modding it on the other hand can be very expensive and supra addictive. However if your gonna mod it, spend the money and do things right, and dont cheap out, its better, more reliable and cheaper in the long run.

Most Supra owners are broke, because there is no end to the modding. Power is a drug! They start to mod, so that they can hit "X" amount of power. Then, they feel that power, and read about others with more, and the cycle starts all over.

A well maintained car should give you very little trouble.

I personally put 136,000+ miles on my 1989 Turbo - and it was my daily driver until the fall of 2005. In that time I had 3 issues. First... the clutch let go just 2 days after I bought the car. I replaced it with a reman'd clutch @ 50,500 miles and it is still holding fine today (136,000+ miles later). Second... my CPS started failing. The car would just stall out when sitting at a light. Third... I missed a coolant hose when I replaced the rest of the hoses under the hood and it burst in traffic. I couldn't find the failed hose while sitting on the side of the freeway so I got towed home.

A lot of people here buy some beat up Supra and expect it to hold higher horsepower levels without doing the proper maintenance first.

Take care of your Supra and it will take care of you. Skip your maintenance and you will pay for it eventually.

of the 4 some odd years i've had mine in spent a total of a year running. between modding and breaking things due to user error and what not its cost me about 7k in 4 years but i wouldnt trade it for anything else deff fun to drive. mind you i have 2 dd a 90 4runner and a 09 tacoma so having it not running all the time dosnt really bother me much

X2

I have pretty much ZERO problems with my car and i daily drive it. Of course i had a quality rebuild by driftmotion, but really nothing has gone bad on the car. I do need ball joints and struts but that's to be be for any car with my mileage. As long as it's done right and you aren't abusing the snot out of it it's quite reliable.

They don't cost that much to maintain. The cost comes from the fact that they are 20 yr old cars, and stuff starts to wear out that doesn't fall under maintenance such as the steering rack, brake master cylinder, oil pressure gauge, bushings, sensors of all types, and lots of weird electrical stuff (all from my 155k mile car). If you find a low miles car that was kept in a garage, you will save yourself alot, but not all of those hassles. Of course it will likely have the stock HG, but at least you can plan for that.

Agreed.

bought my 87 with 42k miles on the clock back in 94 (i was 2n owner). Went from South Dakota to Miami in 96. Daily Drove it from 96 - 98 then moved to Minnesota. Daily drove it from 98-04. Through rain, snow etc. Never once did it "break". And at one point I even upgraded the turbo which was about the only thing that needed attention at about 150k milles. I always maintaned it. That means, oil changes, spark plugs, hose changes, radiator flushes yearly. Died at 225k, #5 bearing was no more.

So never had a "break down". Even with the spun bearing. I drove it with ZERO oil pressure for 15 miles. Hay it was either that or not finish my last exam to graduate from university. Sorry, the graduation was more important ;)
