well I had a hunch and tore into it again, and am working on a valve adjustment. Thank god for connections. well anyway I can get my shims at a dealer pretty cheap. But I guess my main question is... If the valve has no clearance at all, Is this a sign that the valve itself is bad? my 5th valve back on the exhaust side has less than 0.004 of an inch clearance. I could not get the feeler gauge in the gap, Hence there is no gap. But this is also were the sound was coming from.I really hope this is the problem, being I've never gotten to drive the damn car, just try to fix it since the day I got it. aaarrrggghhh!!!!!!!

not really - just means the shim is too thick and there is a good chance that when warm, the valve never 'shuts' properly. Its hard to say whether there is a problem with the valve or not because we don't know the shim thickness, if the head has ever had a valve job, etc. Check the shim thickness and change to a thinner one (that gives proper clearance). Unless you want to pull the head, get things in proper running order first, then work on furthering your diagnosis.

My head rebuild was $680 total (parts, labor, and a little tax).

3 angle valve job, new exhaust valve guides, valves shimmed properly, new valve seals, exhaust manifold holes helicoiled and studded, head machined and lapped to a mirror finish.

Was expecting it to be more like $500, but oh well.
