Hey guys, Im at a crossroad or whether do i want to buy a 7mgte block and do a full built rebuild or do a 1jz swap. I know if i go the 1j swap its a used motor, but designed from the factory to hold hp, and if i built the 7m its fresh and with the right combination of parts can handle just as much if not more as the 1j and have 0 miles on it.

Now a couple of supra owners here in NYC, the older crowd all tried building up the 7m and continue to have problems with knocking and so forth and all went 1j, 1.5j and 2j and make alot of power with no complaints.

My question just is how much did it cost you guys with the machine shop labor to build up your 7m. I think i mite be different and show these ppl what a properly built 7m can do.

Thanks

Soooo, they all suck at building motors?

That's all that I got out of your statement...

Here is my complete parts and labor charge for a 7MGE to GTE conversion, done three years ago. The entire process took two months. I still enjoy this DD. Should I stay off the throttle, I can get decent mileage. Van

Nice, thanks guys. This is exactly the price list that im looking for. This help me out alot. As far as my friends in my group that doesnt know how to build motors lolz, I think that they probrably just didnt get the tolerances right. With the 2j they never opened them up and the 1j they just did 1.5j motors so its no real internal work they did so they really couldnt mess those up. But i heard some horror stories of rebuilding motors knocking soon and stuff with the 7m so i was just wondering.
Also I was looking at the labor for machine shops to do the machine work and assemble the motor and what not. I think i made my mind made up. Im going to build up the 7m. Thanks guys, But keep the list coming.

Wise choice. ;) With everyone going 1j/2j these days, us 7M folk will be the odd ones out. ;)

My 7M rebuild costs:
top gasket kit, oil pump, ARP main & rod bolts, Exh. man. Kit, Arp head bolts - $700.00
Ross pistons: $750
AFPR, 550's, MkIV fuel pump: $750
Head work: $250
Engine machining: $850
I did most of the head work myself, (p&p, valve lapping), and I paid my bud $1000 to help with the build and re & re as I'd never done it before. This of course doesn't include all the misc. stuff, altogether, I'd say about $4500.00, then I still needed d/pipe, exhaust, new turbo, intake, etc.
Whichever way you go, gl with your build!

thanks man, yea im going with the 7m, i just finish my first 7m non turbo to turbo swap and did it myself and learned so much that i wanna stay with the 7m instead of having to learn the jz motors all ova again. I would like to take my knowledge with the 7m and show these jz motors what they can do. Also this gives me a reason to go all out and buy some goodies for my car since im going to be using another 7m and when it blows i can put all of the goodies on that one. Now to start looking at turbo's lolz

I did mine on a very minimal budget but never added up all the "little costs". Stuff like clamps, bolts, fluids, misc hoses, o-rings, paint, special tools, etc can really add up. I would say I spent in the area of $2500 for a stock bottom end with BPU top end.

As for a "properly built" 7M having lasting power, your "friends" are obviously retarded and unfortunately they are the the rule rather than the exception when it comes to building a toyota I6.
