so just as the title says i would like to know if you run a steering cooler. be it stock or aftermarket. i would like to know what size, brand, and where did you mount it. i can't imagine many people run the stock one considering its on the opposite side and acts as a intercooler heater with a larger front mount as it practicaly has to sit on the top of the intercooler. i couldn't seem to find much info on the subject. and theres always new members or old members with new setups so let hear it! or if you don't run one at all how has it performed???

Running 2j ge-t without a cooler. 500 miles clocked in mid summer heat and no ill effects. Also ran the 7m's without and still no issues

Single 1jz. I run a earls cooler mounted between the ic and condensor. Think is 7/3/2.

It's a good thing to have. If you track your car should already have it as well.

On my old 88' I used a JZA70 power steering cooler and used the stock 7m cooler for the hydro pump. Currently I am not running a cooler and using my stock cooler for my hydro pump.

Stock 7m oil coolers are perfect for the ps system. I used that before I switched everything to an fitting. There also stupid easy to install.

The later 91/92 coolers are better as well. You definately want a cooler though if you want consistant steering performance (and of course far less wear).

This seems to be a popular option, and I plan on doing this myself, after cleaning it out first.

IIRC, the biggest reason the MkIII wasnt a very successful race car was because they DNF'd due to steering failure and overheating. I saw results awhile back for races from the 80s, and the races they did finish, they did very well in (often 2nd place). Especially if you live in a warm/hot climate, I definitely think upgrading the steering cooler is important.

The factory oil cooler's flow is pressure based and not thermostatically controlled I believe, so if you dont hit the threshold, the oil wont circulate to/from the cooler. Basically Toyota was nice enough to give us an excellent power steering cooler, hooked it up to the oiling system, and forgot to install an oil cooler :D

No cooler here and whenever I top up the power steering fluid (small leak) the fluid is always burnt.. and I don't even do that hard of driving.. maybe a few short pulls. And some quick corners but it shouldn't heat up the system that much.. a power steering cooler should have been factory..

I'm saying a real cooler. Not the line that runs across the front lol. That's obviously not sufficient and I personally don't consider that a cooler. The 91-92 ones however.. I would consider those a cooler.

You consider those a cooler cause they have fins? It's basically the same thing except the air gets directed better.

The fins would help dissipate heat better. Am I wrong in thinking that the 91/92s are coolers and pre 91 aren't?

Yes. There all coolers. The tubes run in front of the car so the passing air can cool the tubes which cool the fluid. Same principle as a ic.

If there was no cooler it would go from rack straight to the resivour.

I use a small (6x10" I think) cooler I got off the shelf at Autozone, mounted in front of radiator (driver side, behind condensor). I also have a recently rebuilt PS rack and seems all good.

The stock cooler is a pain to install w/aftermarket intercooler... The lines to it have to run too far from where I have my reservoir (on driver's side). I'd rather not pull my fluid lines that far.

I come from a land down under
Everything is built to run at specific tolerances, overheat something and that all changes, things become either too tight or too loose then bad things happen... ;)

Binding/leaking/cavitation and so on, failure isn't far away.
