so, no stock intercooler on 1jz? thanks

yes there is an intercooler, its larger than the 7m's... most are damaged in shipping easiest to buy an aftermarket one..

stock intercooler yes, stock oil cooler.. noish..

it does have coolant pass through @ the filter to help some, but wont do that much..

I highly recommend using an oil cooler on your 1JZ...sandwich plate, thermostat and lines. Upgrade the cooler too...your motor will thank you ;)

An oil cooler is necessary on any turbo motor IMO...the turbo produces additional heat that can easily take oil temps above 100 deg C where the oil viscosity is correct for the motor. Temps above 100 deg C cause viscosity to drop quickly and cause the oil to break down....you will also lose oil to vaporization.

A thermostat controlled oil cooler circuit will allow the oil to get to ops temp quickly and stay there. It's the optimum condition for the motor.

The thermostat has nothing to do with coolant...it needs to be in the oil flow so it can sense oil temp.

If the oil filter screws directly on to the block like the NA 7M or it uses a straight through filter head, you can use one of these sandwich adapters:

Kills two birds w/ one stone...sandwich plate w/ a built in thermostat that modulates flow to the cooler. ;)

So you remove the stock watercooled plate? I don't like that because it gets the oil to operating temp as quickly as possible.
With this replaced by an aftermarket thermostatic adapter it will take a lot more time for the oil to get to operating temp and thus more wear.

Ideally I would like to keep the stock watercooled plate in combination with an aftermarket sandwich plate to provide additional cooling when needed.
So I figure the aftermarket sandwichplate should be behind (flow wise) the stock watercooled plate, else the stock plate would heat up the cooled oil again. Would that fit?

The above sandwich adapter is designed to go between the filter and it's mount...the adapter is 1.25" (31.75 mm) thick. If there are no clearance issues with the filter, mount it between....that way, the oil would flow from your stock set-up, to the cooler, back to the filter before it goes to the rest of the motor.

The internal thermostat restricts flow to the cooler to 10% of the volume of the flow through the sandwich adapter until the oil reaches 180 deg F (82 deg C), then opens as temp increases to 90% of flow. There will be no problem with the oil reaching ops temp quickly...especially with oil flowing through the turbos(s).

I'd like to see a pic of a JZ motor that has the filter mounted...anyone got one?

Thanks!

Looks like the thickness will not be a problem if you use the Mocal sandwich plate. You will need to determine the filter thread size...likely a 3/4x16 thread. The way the Mocal tightens up allows you to orient the inlet/outlet holes for the cooler in any direction you wish.

Cooler wise, I like the stacked plate design like the B&M...close to this size cooler with 1/2" NPT threaded inlet/outlet so you can use -8 (min) lines:
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=BMM-70272&N=700+115&autoview=sku

It will need to be mounted in the air stream...if you choose to mount it in a place were air flow is not good (like forward of the wheel well), you can use this cooler with a fan:
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=BMM-70298&N=700+115&autoview=sku

It comes with a temp switch that turns the fan on at 160 deg F (71 deg C)...again, delays cooling until your oil temps get where you need them to be, but will come on a little before the Mocal thermostat starts to open up to get "ahead" of the heat.

If you really want to go all out, get one of these (part # 555-100520) to mount an oil temp gauge sensor in the return line from the cooler:

BTW - dump the Fram filter...they are crap. Use a Wix or PureOne. Take a look at this:

i think the picture is taken from under the intake manifold..

@ jdub
can you show me the location of the internal thermostat?

and i know for a fact that rich normaly uses a Apex oilfilter..
