How do you pull off the bottom end with engine in the car?

I know I read this somewhere before, is it possible and if so how, to take off the oil pan, take out the oil pump and replace one rod, main and thrust washer bearing for one piston, oh and rod, without taking out the engine? I just want to know if its possible and how?

Why cant it be done. If you take the head off and remove the oil pan. disconnect the rod from the crank and push the piston out of the top of the block?

thats what I was thinking, but the pan has shit in the way apparently, I need to go look again. I also need to fix #6 piston rings. I really dont wanna fully pull the engine, I will, but I dont want to.

The pan cant make it around the pump while its in the car, you can put the car on jacks and drop the rack but Its easier just to pull the whole engine IMO.

Side note: I think our cylinders are kinda V shaped cause I cant pull a piston out from the bottom of the block. I can only remove them from the top.

Its way easier to pull the motor, dont torture yourself. I can get a long block out in 1- 1.5 hrs. But then I have done it many times. Still......alot easier!

yeah i read the TSRM and it looks like hard work...but i dont actually know. you have to lift the car onto jackstands, undo all the steering components, drop them down, and then maybe some things with the engine as well...but since you have to remove the head you might as well go ahead and pull the whole thing right?

can you get the tranny and engine out in one piece? maybe you could do that, and avoid suspension dissasembly... and access the engine better.

so just pull it huh, I havent pulled it before and I gotta throw my head back one to yank it. I was just wondering if this was possible since my heads already off and I dont wanna go buy a hoist and stand right now. I just need to repair one thing, I already inspected my cylinder walls up and down, they are fine.

Not to mention youre bound to find you need to do them all, fixing 1 rod will most likely be a temp band-aid fix. And you might find other things like crank being fuxed.

The whole steering rack, supension, wheels, and the subframe. Then have the car on stands with the engine hanging from a hoist. Safe? No.


Pulling engines not bad, You can do it in 2 maybe 3 hours.

Im taking my chances with a band aid while I save up $3000 for a 1JZ clip and install. More on that later, right now, I just need the car running, if this engine eats itself, hoenstly I dont give as shit, I have a GTE block waiting on a turbo. This Im sure will be fine for a while, Im changing the oil pump as well.

Didn't do it myself - but dropping the 'rack' is how the shop I used did mine. I was in the same boat - wanted to replace the oil pump for "insurance", in my case, and they unbolted & dropped the whole front-end ... suspension, steering & all in one piece while supporting the engine with a stand from below. It looked like a damn fine alternative to the procedure outlined in the TSRM.

yeah i agree...it seems dangerous to have 3 peices of the car supported by different things... you have to brace the car from moving, support the engine, and then drop the suspension enough to get room to work...and unless the car and engine are lifted to a considerable height it seems (in my mind) that you'd be cramped, and even if it was lifted up it would be cramped and dangerous. i dont want to imagine what wouldhappen if the car body fell.

uhhh...that is the procedure isnt it? i know i've seen the tsrm unbolt something with the suspension and drop it...maybe in your case they didnt remove as much and just dropped a larger chunk? lol.

I know by me advance auto rents equiptment out so you wouldn't have to buy the hoist for it just go to them and rent it. I rented a shop compressor from them for like $15 i'm sure the hoist wouldn't be much either

Id need the hoist for about 3 or 4 days, maybe more. I wanted to pull the engine to make sure i know what to get b4 I start.
