The driver of the auto can eat Wendy's and still beat you in a race, but most of them are smart enough to not have Wendy's anywhere near their car.

Hey now, Nick.... What's your beef with Wendy's?? lol

I just recently acquired a 91 Supra Turbo auto and a new member to SM. Honestly, I almost did not make the trade for my motorcycle since she was auto. My bias always went to the manual / standard camp. I must say, I was really impressed with the a340.

The a340 is so smooth and like what the rest of the members have mentioned, it keeps you in the "boost range." So definitely my hats off to the a340.

However, I plan on swapping a r154 tranny in my mkiii. I have been locally road racing / time trials / HPDE, and I was campaigning my Integra (guilty as charged - ex honda fanatic). I am currently selling the Integra to fund my new supra road race project.

My question to you guys / gals is: would the a340 do the job for this type of racing???

C snow, hit me up - since I may swap to manual, my auto will be probably up for grabs...

You will need to find a way to dump more heat, as that has always been the downfall of autos & road racing.
And as some people have touched on, down shifting is problematic for that sort of thing.
That is why I am adding the SupraStick, to keep it in the gear I want.
More than once mine has decided to go into a taller gear entering a corner when I let off the throttle, and dropping the engine out of the powerband for a short bit, then downshifting under full throttle, which led to an istant spin :aigo:

Well if you use the SSv4 in manual mode it should stay in the gear you want. Only thing is in second and below the car is driven from a one way clutch so the rpm will still drop but the proper gear is still engauged.

Ian, is that the design flaw your talkig about? That first and second are driven by a one way clutch with the shift lever in the D position??

That's it Dan, the SSv doesn't have the true manual mode of the PCS so if you put the shifter in 1 it will still shift between 1st and 2nd as dictated by the shift logic and tables, this is what blew my 7M intake apart a few years back when it had shifted into 2nd then kicked down banging the limiter and setting off the intake full of fuel turning it into a big ass pipe bomb!
(disadvantage of a wet intake)

With the PCS in true manual mode shift in 1 = first no matter what ditto on 2 and d, it will start and stay in the gear you select.

Using the buttons/paddles to shift manually can be disconcerting when pedaling fast on winding roads as there's little to no resistance until the shaft speeds match and the sprags lock up, I find it better/easier to drive it on the OD button and the shifter if engine braking to set up for a corner is needed.

Well in manual mode on the SSv4 it will hold the gear you select no matter what just the problem remains of the one way clutches while the shifter is in D. Ive had times I forget to downshift fro 4th and I take off from the light and the trannys still in overdrive. Haha.

That can't be changed because it's the internal valving In the valve body. Your PCS controller can't change that can it? That's why you use the shifter and of buttons?

Are there transmissions without that flaw? I figured it was how trannys were made so that when your slowing down and it downshifts to the lower gear the car wouldn't jerk from the downshift.

Don't know the 340 is the first electronic controlled trans I've used, any other auto car I've had always ran a TH400, dumb but effective at the time.

I assume cars that come with button/paddle shifters don't behave that way.
