I haven't seen "crushed heads" from over torque, but I have seen cracks in 7m blocks between the head bolt hole and the cylinder walls, that were almost certainly attributable to over-torquing. Many engine blocks will crack like this when severely overtightened.

The cracks are from a few reasons.

Thin Deck on the early blocks

Not chamfered or deburred

Crap left in the holes/threads

I don't believe overtightening them is a root cause though.

My Bud here bought a genuine 18000Km car that had sat for many years and the deck was cracked in a few places. (87 car so light early casting)

IMHO.. there are 3 types of people who should own MKIII's...
1. people who could afford to have one repaired when the head gasket blows.. (it could cost upwards of $3,000 after machining, parts and labor)
2. people who can and do wrench their own cars.
3. people who already know about the head gasket issue and purchase a car that was already repaired correctly.

If going your going to replace the HG, go with a MHG and a set of ARP studs. I just would do rather do it once and spend the money on the machining so it is done right the first time. BTW, need to have block decked (straight & smooth, 30Ra), and head also straight & smooth. There is a reason all the newer supra engines (JZ) have MHG.

how much to do all the jobs for a shop to swap to 2jz ge ?

probably $2500 just for the labor....then $5000 in parts.....then $1500 working out the bugs...

Or you could spend $1000 on getting a mhg installed on the 7m...or install the gasket yourself and spend $250 decking and $300 on an hks stopper..

I vote for do the work yourself...if you can't spend money and can't work on the car yourself than an mkiii isn't a good choise of car.

But you need to make it (4)
Ther original owner of a MKIII who gets tired of blowing 7M & the time it keeps them running, or the guy who found a MKIII body with a blown 7M for free or a couple hundred and can easily swap in a newer 1JZ for 2500 + basic wrench turning knowledge. or pay someone 6-800 to drop in your 1JZ
