How difficult is it to put TEMS in a non-TEMS car?

Hi,

As some of you know, I totalled my 87 last week.

I am now looking for a shell or badly running car to put my drivetrain and interior into. I'm finding some good candidates; but, some don't have TEMS. I want to keep the TEMS and was wondering if anyone has ever put TEMS in a non-TEMS car.

Also, what other years will my 87 parts work on? I know that's an open ended question; but, I'm just looking for a general answer like: "Hey dude, stick with 88's and 89's because the other years are a pain to fit 87 parts into, like the ECU for example." :icon_bigg

Anyway, thanks guys. I just about cry everytime I look at broken supra sitting in the garage.:nono:

Not hard?

haha.

No it is actually quite hard. The harness if it does not have those provision for the TEMS will need to be added. I can tell you from the rats nest that is the OEM harness that it is not a simple or easy job by any stretch of the imagination.

Depends, so far as I know the late 89 harness was simplified and they kept the provisions.

I've seen non-TEMS cars that have the plugs by the strut towers (and no, it wasn't removed)

Umm, my car didn't have tems, and it came with the plugs at each corner. And on top of that, changing a harness is easy.

You can't find a car with TEMS? I seem to have the opposite problem, and I don't limit my miles on Autotrader.

No kidding, I understand why people got it in the first place, but they are useless now.

you are thinking the engine harness which is easy.

The MAIN harness is not even remotely close to easy.

Basically requires the dash be pulled, BOTH front quater panels, both EFI fuse panels (inside the engine bay and inside the cabin) and then the harness will come out in one piece.

Oh, I can find them too; but, not as close as I'd like. With diesel at $4.80+ a gallon, the closer the better! :naughty:

Thanks guys...I'm just trying to figure out what to do. I like the idea of softening the ride for those looooong cruises; but, like to stiffin it up when I'm canyon carving or auto-crossing. Just my preference...

The search goes on...

Swapping the whole harness really would be your best bet. You said the other car was totalled, so if you still have all the pieces and you're swapping over a lot of your parts to the new one, then you should have most of the stuff off the car anyway. I've pulled harnesses from a couple cars, there's a lot to them and they're connected all over the place, but it's possible and realistically will probably take less time than wiring everything into a non-tems car if it doesn't have the plugs. It will also look cleaner instead of having wires run all over the place.
