For one thing if there's a turbo on it, than it's a GTE... :p lol

Is it just the engine out of the car? I'd look at the valve covers... I believe only the GTE only theres a part on the valve cover towards the front that sinks down for where the coil pack sits...

Check to see if there's 2 knock sensors, I think only the GTE's have 2 of them..

As far as serial numbers or anything like that... I don't know someone else I'm sure will chime in...

Drain port can be drilled. It's more trouble than it's generally worth, but it can be. If it's not there, it's definitely a GE block.

GTE uses 2 knock sensors, front and rear. The GE has one knock sensor in the middle. Even if someone went to the trouble to tap out the other 2 bosses, the center one would be tapped for a GE block. (There are 3 bosses on the block casting.)

The intake cam IS different, but you won't be able to tell that visually, and some people have put NA intake cams into their GTE engines, so it's not conclusive.

[opinion]The only really important difference is that the GE has 9.2:1 compression, and the GTE has 8.4:1 compression stock. The GTE has oil squirters inside as well, but thay's a less important distinction.[/opinion] This can be checked by pulling the #1 spark plug at #1 TDC and inspecting the piston top. If the piston is dished, they're GTE pistons. If it's flat/slightly domed then it's a GE piston. You can see the difference through the spark plug hole if you're paranoid enough.

The block and head castings are the same, the cranks are the same, (for the same years) just a few things drilled and tapped differently for the different electronics and sth.

I actually kind of figured that a low boost build below stock FCO) with the GE pistons would be a fun build. Lots more bottom end from the compression.
